BUT: we've just had mahoosive probs with our PC due to a virus, (and we had Norton loaded ) and the bloke who repaired it has advised us against any free music download sites

So.................lad now says that if he has to pay £1 a track, (dearer than a fekkin CD), he can't afford to, so doesn't see the point of getting one

What do others do?

MP3 Player? Don't even bother feeding the frenzy that is the iPod - get a Philips HDD070 and get a radio too! (MUCH, MUCH better quality sound, smaller, cheaper)

MP3 tracks? Buy the CD and read it into your PC into MP3 - then load it on your Philips HDD070 - SORTED!!

I had a mate who raved on about his valve amp, how superb it was ,

i had just purchesed a very good pair of speakers, which my mate rated as superb, and a deal was struck to spend a day sampling the joys of a valve amp, with a well recieved pair of speakers..
to cut a long story short,


the speakers sounded superb, until they were plugged into his valve amp.

the bass became so thick and slabby it was uncomfortable!!!!!!

yet tried on an alternate amp non valve they were awsome...

i dont know whether he has his valve amp, but i still have my spkrs!!!

I've used limewire and apart from the odd corrupt file, I've not had a problem. Now, I am on a macintosh, so the usual viruses and trojans don't effect me.

I don't actually download that many illegal songs anymore. Mainly as I've ripped 60% of my music to my iPod (40% back in UK, will be ripped when I'm back) plus I've been using the UK iTunes Music Store, and admit that it is a simple and painless thing to do, far to easy to purchase 10 ablums in a go though I will be using the Canadian version when it opens, so that'd help me with the cost of things.

Pete - What format does that phillips thing use for music files? I know mp3 isn't the best format, but I would have thought that AAC (at medium or high quality) or Apple Lossless is superior.

Maybe I'm being thick here, but if they both use mp3 as a format for music, how is the philips going to be better than the iPod? I'm talking mainly about headphone usage here. both will have the same output jack to headphones, so surely the headphone would also have an impact, and you're not forced to use any specific headphone.

The other point is that, from what I've seen, AAC and AL are better quality than mp3, thus, would that not mean that the quality of output from the iPod would be better?

I'm not trying to start a fight here, just curious to know why you think the Phillips player is better than the iPod.
