I know a few people that don't go to pubs because of the smoke. In the future they will.

Pubs will still do a good trade long term as most people will put drinking and socialising above having a smoke.

Clubs and non-food serving pubs will still allow smoking though.

I love going out for a few beers at the weekend but can't stand smelling of smoke. I dont see why i should suffer, if people really need to smoke they can do it outside.

If they do ban it I will be very pleased.

Heck, I actually agree with Pete on something

At the end of the day it's all about choice, and right now the only choice I have is to stay at home, or end up stinking of tobacco. With a full ban, anyone can go anywhere and breathe fresh air (a not unreasonable request IMHO) and smokers can always pop outside to feed their habit.

Great, i might actually start going pubbing/clubbing a bit more when it happens. I really hate coming home minging of smoke, ******* filthy habit. It's going to be amusing watching all of the hardened "our freedom's being eroded" smokers bleating about it.

Smoking does have its advantages, I mean if they ban it all together who's gonna pay for our fabulous NHS seriously though all these smokers are helping us non smokers with our tax paying keeping it too a minimum

People should be forced to have health insurance like in the states, might make them think a bit about the lifestyle they lead if they're paying directly for their healthcare. Lots of people do anyway already, good thing IMO.

There is NO OTHER product that the goverment can charge or get away with charging 80% tax....

If it was banned, there would be no NHS....

lol Just a moment too late!

Anyway, petrol doesn't have 80% tax - rather, 80% of the cost of petrol IS tax. That's a tax rate of 400%

If a ban results in any decline in tax revenue, guess where the easiest place to get it back is?

As for forcing people to pay directly for health care (as in the US) to make people reconsider their lifestyle, it won't work. A large portion of the smoking population cannot afford private health care.

A smoking ban in England is inevitable, but, as well as many benefits, there will be some negative effects.

News story here.

It will only include pubs that serve prepared food, which isn't probably such a bad thing.

And what percentage of the NHS budget do you think is wasted on people who only have themselves to blame for being in Hospital in the 1st place!?

If there were no smokers then a huge weight would be removed from the NHS, allowing them to have more time to treat patients without self inflicted illness and disease..

Why's that? I think it's a perfectly legitimate argument. Smoking is one of the leading causes of Cancer and related diseases in the UK. If there were no smokers, then the NHS would definately be relieved of a huge patient burden due to the lack of smoking related illness and disease.

What part of that statement is daft?

IIRC, the tax collected from smoking pays for more than the cost of the treatment of smoking related illnesses. The same cannot be said for obesity, which is also a massive drain on the NHS. The cost of treating smoking related illness is reducing, the cost of treating obesity is increasing. At some point the revenue from tobacco tax will not be enough to cover the NHS bill and the money will have to be raised from somewhere...

Don't forget most people don't suffer from smoking related illness for many years (Tax paying years!) Us smokers pay for the helf service but we don't mind you using it. Oh and we don't mind you watching the motor sport we sponsor either.

Do you think anyone that is in hospital due to a hobby related accident should be treated? You could save the NHS a fortune.

If non-smoking pubs n clubs are such a good idea why not open one and see how well you do (You might make your fortune)

Smoking & hunting today but what about when it is something you enjoy doing? cars that do less than 30 to the gallon for example.

Jerome,

Yeah, you're right. Smoking is bad, but what we eat def. has the largest impact on our health and resistance to disease.

Time to put an 80% tax on confectionary and junk food too then!

A stupid example mate. You can't compare an accident with smoking related disease. People don't accidentally die of smoking related cancer or heart disease. It is more or less a certainty that if you smoke, you are likely to significantly shorten your life and die of a disease directly related to smoking.

Accidents are unfortunate and happen to everyone, but smoking is YOUR choice.
