She was on with Frank Skinner the other night, I had to turn over before I booted the telly in. As Eric Morecambe would have said, she sang all the right notes, just in the wrong order

Rolf Harris, The Scissor Sisters, Eric Prydz Although I can understand why Steve Winwood would assist in the recording.

PG,

agree hendrix version is the best although the corrs guitarist ain't bad and did a reasonable job, sting also did a version which is ok. Yep and the other sentiments regarding jamelia, yep her vocal is way too weak to even come close to Sam Brown's although I do like the scissor sisters and their version of comfortably numb is pretty good IMHO and quite different to the original floyd version.

Covers rarely come close to the original, my fave cover was Dear Prudence by the Banchees. It is a sign of older age when people around you think the cover is new though!

IMHO Little Wing shouldn't be touched by anyone, except maybe by Clapton or Knopfler

Sting's cover of Little Wing is fantastic

Unlike a lot of his other pretentious twaddle

What about All Along The Watchtower or Because The Night - way better as covers.

Mind you, Maria Carey's butchery of Nilsson's Without You still makes me feel more than a little nauseous

"Without You" was actually by Badfinger. Nillsson's version was a cover as well.

Wogan played the Badfinger version yesterday.

10 second clip available here

Cheers for that. Things is though, the Nilsson cover is "the" version, isn't it, in the same way as Watchtower.

Agreed. Another Hendix cover of Dylan to look out for is "Like a Rolling Stone".

Completely different, wasn't it? Not better, not worse, just a completely different interpretation, like a cover version should be.

Unlike The Corrs, who stab a sugary dagger through the heart of every song they touch. The girls look stunning, and they can sing/play, but frankly, they're cruise ship material

Gary

Only decent Hendrix cover i've ever heard was Stevie Ray Vaughan doin' Little Wing.

And that Scissor Sisters cover of Comfortably Numb is amazingly **** poor. What was going on in their heads, lets take the song with the greatest guitar solo ever and do it in the style of the Bee Gees.

Thank Christ it's not just me who thinks The Scissor Sisters are vastle overrated.

"Ooh, it's such fun, they're so camp." Yes, but if I want camp, Erasure doing Abba's Gimme Gimme Gimme A Man After Midnight will do the job well. Just taking a song and doing it in a 70's disco style is no better than Stars On bloody-45, and makes William Shatner's latest output seem (almost) listenable.

Covers of Dylan's material don't count, I mean even I can SING better than him FFS

Blinded by the Light - another cover of a Springsteen song that was way better than the original. My personal opinion is that it's the version you hear first that tends to be the one you prefer

PS Muppet Paster surely you mean the SECOND greatest guitar solo ever

EVERYBODY knows the greatest is contained within Sweet Home Alabama

Yet another belting Springsteen cover is "Fire" by the Pointer Sisters. Haven't heard the original and Robin Williams' version as Elmer Fudd doesn't count.

Generally agree with your point though about "first version you hear". Not always the case though with "Like a Rolling Stone" as mentioned above.

Has anyone heard Paul Weller's cover of All Along The Watchtower? noticed it's on his new album. I suspect he's probably ruined it, overrated non-talent that he is.
