I am going to Hawaii for a week in December. A quick glance on the Avis and Hertz web sites at the vehicles available is making me shudder... Are any of the Chevrolet's, Oldsmobile's etc actually fun to drive?

Or should I just go for the Automatic Focus Saloon ??

Any recommendations on rental companies are also greatly appreciated.

You can hire a Ford Mustang from Hertz and several other places do the new Crossfire.

I had a Chevy Impala V8 and a Taurus when I was in Hawaii earlier this year. The Impala was OK, although not what you'd call mega fun. It was quick in straight line (for a tank), and handled ok (better than the Taurus anyway). Suprisingly, there were some fun roads (on Kauai at least), so I wished I had something a bit more interesting to drive...

All the major rental places do stuff like the Mustang, although the rental ones are pretty crap V6 jobbies.

There were some Chrysler 300cs around, which looked very nice. Not fun as such, but they did look pretty cool.

We always used Rentawreck, cost about $8 a day, not a lot split between 5 of us. As long as you are not too particular about having a swish car.

The American cars are fun to drive in a sense that they lack sophistication. We rented a Ford Expedition (w/5.4 V8 optional engine) in Ohio earlier this yr, & the car is so indestructable that I did a few burn-outs on an empty stretch of road. Other than that , the car feels underpowered for a 5.4 V8.

For cheaper prices, search UK car rental sites for offers. We found an offer on Alamo UK web site which knocked off about 25% on the car hire.

I could be slightly wrong about some of the steps as I'm trying to remember what the in-laws did earlier in the year!
