Has anyone been caught by the variable speed limit cameras on the M25?
As it says.
And not a friend of a friends mum, personally.
I drive the M4 to M40 section daily and at a reasonable speed when the car in front allows. I have a radar detector that tells me that only a couple of the gantries have cameras but I’ve pushed it under them a couple of times (in a rush or not concentrating on my speed) and never had a problem.
Do they work and if so how fast do you have to be going to trigger them?
(can’t say I’ve ever seen one flash either…)

I seem to recall mate of mine was done when he was rushing for a Heathrow plane once, but I think he was going a bit (e.g. 110mph+). This was back in about 1997/8.

The cameras only work if a varible speed limit is in place. If the signs are saying anything less than the normal National limit, eg 50MPH then the cameras are active, if the limit has not been reduced then they are switched off.
Rumour has it and it is only a rumour that they are set at 110+ to gaurentee a conviction and BAN I think a someone on here knows a bit about em involved in the soft ware or somthing
Then again i could be wrong LOL

Also bear in mind that these are digital cameras - so they never run out of film and yes they are very much live when the variable speed limits are in force. I've seen them flash on several occassions.
yep - ive done the M40 to M4 stretch loads - never ever seen one flash - I've even crawled under them at <5mph in traffic
and closely inspected behind the signs and have never seen a camera either.....

If you're going slow enough (often happens on the M25!) and you're a passenger you can see the camera lens occasionally. I've also seen them flash on the other carriageway many times. The only ones I've seen have been in the outside lane though ....
Oh, and as for spotting them, they're in grey boxes above each lane built into the gantry

A mate of mine got done round by Heathrow on the M25 by a gantry camera in 2000 - I know the exact day as he had just picked me up at the airport after a trip to Oz. He was snapped at 75 in a 60 though he swears even to this day that he didn't remember/notice a variable limit in force that day....
I'm very paranoid about those cameras now as a result and always tootle by bang on the limit though always see cars (and lorries sometimes...
) hurtling past me......

I don't think they are digital as i've seen people up there changing the film. I know someone who was done back in 1998, but AFIK there are only 3 or 4 cameras on the whole stretch. The cameras in the 40 roadworks limits are live though as i've seen them go off a few times.
I live right next to the variable limit bit.
Some gantries have cameras boxes on them some dont, of those some have cameras in and some dont. You just have to know which gantries are packing and which aint. If you do the stretch enough times, you learn which ones are the ones to look out for.
astraboy.

My understanding is that the cameras are only one a few gantries, and only will prosecute when a variable limit is showing. So when a limit is showing I stick to it, however when there is no limit I come trough at my usual cruising speed of just under 100. Never received a ticket. I dd come through once at about 115, one camera flashed, but no ticket.

Maybe they don't work on the hard shoulder..........
I've never seen any cameras on the M25, other than those GATSOS during the roadworks for lane widening by Heathrow.
I regularly go round the M25 from Brighton to the M1 and stick to about 85 most of the way. If there are road works on ANY ROAD I slow down as I know there are most likely workers in the road.
I've often wondered about the possibility of cameras though. Some of the gantries have the camera stickers where as others don't.
I've even gone to the effort in the past of opening the rear sun roof and sticking my head out (obviously someone else is driving
) to see if there are any cameras. If they are there, they are bloody small

I'm suprised so many of you have done silly things to look at the gantry behind you, just examine the ones on the other carriageway, it's much easier.
Lots of gatso-like boxes. I've exceeded the variable limit through one or two of them and not been done, but shat one when I saw the boxes and was well behaved for the rest of them. I dont use the M25 regularly.

I used to drive that bit every day to work and back and always had the detector up. Never pushed my luck when the variable limits were up even though the Bel seemed to do the trick in warning me. I've seen several flashes of the cameras across all lanes in the opposite direction to me too.
