Shortly before their departure a nearby caravan believed to belong to the couple was set ablaze.

people in caravans don't always cause trouble
i don't agree with burning them, they are humans afterall
kids often live in them
evil scum people can be found everywhere not just caravans
you hear of these attacks occaisionaly
some people really don't like caravaners
could you have done this yourself?
u should really think of those who could have been killed
murder could have occured here

breif account of events.
Old dear uncapable of looking after herself moves into retirement home and has to sell the house to pay for her care.
when she's gone, squatters move, by getting in through an open window - as there's no sign of forced entry the police are powerless to evict.
on GMTV yesterday morning, reporter questions them but gets told where to go in no uncertain terms.
Pi.. I mean squatters have parked caravan around the corner and last night it got torched by outraged locals Squatters leave shortly after.

Good to see someone showed some backbone and torched their property
Can anyone explain the logic in that the police have no powers to evict.... or should we put it down to this country seems to side with the dregs of society all the time....
My gran owns a property which is let to a couple of ***** which dont pay the rent. Letting agency instruct them that the lease wont be renewed and give a date to vacate the property..... couple go to the local council whos advice is stay in the property and await being taken to court and then they will help them with accomodation. Of course the council have no concern that my 88 year old gran has to take them to court or the outstanding money or that she continues to loose more money whilst the ******* are in there.

Put the house up for sale. Get some of your friends around to view the property and express an interest.
You don't have to sell, but if they know they're being turfed out soon, they might move.

I once went to view a house with squatters in it. One of the guys was guiding me around the house and asking why I would want to move into such an area, "All the neighbours look down at us around here" he said.
He asked if I did buy the house could I let them live there for at least 6 months.
As far as eviction is concerned it's a pretty straightforward procedure. It's just the time and expense that's the bummer.

Provided court procedure is followed in settling the matter then owner - or the person legally entitled to possession - will always succeed in a claim for a 'possession order'. This then entitles the owner to the services of the court bailiffs in evicting a trespasser who remains in occupation.
So it seems that this country doesn't side with the 'dregs' all the time.

about time the law was changed.
IMHO, squatting is intruding, they're not wanted on the premises and they are not the legal owner, therefore they have no right to be there.
Squatting should be regarded as a breach of the peace, and as locals get very irate by it - you might argue that it's incenting(sp) to riot - a strong word but a caravan has been burnt out after all - Maybe it was Jeremy Clarkson or Bricktop...

[QUOTE=Andrew Dixon]Squatting is, and always has been, seen as a civil matter rather than a criminal one. It is a dispute between individuals over the possesion of a property.
QUOTE]
So if 'trespass' (which is what squatting is!) were made a criminal offense then the police could just come along and remove the *******. If you were allowed 'reasonable force' as the owner then the problem would go away over night ....

As a matter of interest does the Squatting bit only apply to vacant premises, or could you come home having forgotten to lock the front door, find a load of pikeys in your house and then not be able to get them out for months??

I don't see why the police can't forcibly remove people from property which does not belong to them when they are uninvited.

I think it comes down to yet another bit of crappy UK law:
The couple had changed the locks when they first entered the property and pinned a message to the front door claiming their rights under "Section Six".
The note refers to the Criminal Justice Act 1977 which bars people from gaining access to property, including their own, by using violence or threats of violence.

“I don't see why the police can't forcibly remove people from property which does not belong to them when they are uninvited”....
Exactly and the same goes for people who dont pay rent.... if you stop paying then as far as I am concerned you have no right to be there

I saw that note on the window.
If it was me I don't think I'd be letting a post-it note get in the way of removing them by force - this sort of nonsense makes my blood boil
