Default Any camping or tent experts please?

Looking for a 4-5 manner (me, wife, beer and wine) and want one with enough room to stand up, if possible

But am getting confused by "hydrostatic head" measurement that is always quoted in mm?

Roy.

P.S. Has anyone been to Trowbridge Village Pump Festy ?

Be the envy of everyone on the campsite when you get an erection in 20 seconds

Worth the extra IMHO, I've had mine nearly ten years and it's still going strong. Just done me another Glastonbury.

They do bigger tents as well, look at Ridgi-domes.

hydrostatic head is a measurement to tell you how much rainfall (wieght of rainfall) the tent will withstand - anything over 2000mm should be OK unless you are really really unlucky

As I've just spent the last weekend searching endless websites looking for exactly the same thing I now consider myself to be a bit of an expert on four man tents

As funds were tight we've just bought this one from Millets.

There's a good site here, here and here.

We went for the millets 4 berth Coniston one because it offered the biggest space for the money 3metres x 5metres and just under 2metres headroom, it also comes in a really tiny 12.5kg holdall thingy. I also liked the red guy ropes

Graz, thanks for that top tip, seem to be lots on a certain auction site up for grabs. You do pay extra for getting it up quickly though don't you?

Ours has only got 1500mms of hydrostatic head wotsit, fingers crossed we don't get more than 15cms of rain in any one go

Thanks too Scoobychick. A new Millets has just opened in Devizes so might slip on down there and have a nose about.

Mmm, red guy ropes....i suppose i could change them for gold if i start modding it.

it is more a measure of pressure of rain than amount - 1000mm will keep you dry most of the time but if you get one of those massive thunderstorm downpours (you know the ones that hurt if you are outside) it might get a bit leaky.

(btw - 1500mm is 150 cm - if you get that much rain you probably wont care if the tent leaks as you will be swimming anyway )

I visited Devizes for the 1st time on Saturday to look at

a) this house - http://www.fastcropit.com/humberts/t...m?id=HUPE00255
b) Cara Dillon

AND I've just ordered tickets for the Trowbridge Pumpy thing, but have not been before.

Can't really help with the tent, though.

It's not really a measure of the quantity of rain more the force that it hits the tent.

A tent flysheet with a hydrostatic head of 1.5m means that it could have a 1.5 m column of static water placed upon it and it shouldn't leak through. It can withstand the force of 1.5 m of water. So if the rain can hit the tent with a greater force than a 1.5 m static column of water then it will leak.

I think you would need some pretty nasty weather conditions to get that to happen

Ratman - Lovely house, a friend says it's been beautifully restored, but the general consensus "round town" is that it's a bit overpriced and a bit small. Hope you like bells!

If you want something small and overpriced then i might be able to help

How was Cara Dillon? We went to loads of the festival gigs, my favourite was the John Etheridge Stephane Grapelli/Django Rheinhardt evening, superb!

Ah! Unless of course you are buying it, in which case it is more than roomy and an absolute bargain. Welcome to Devizes.

What did you think of it?

No, I'm not buying the house. It is gorgeous but tiny, with no garden nor garage and too far to commute. Nice frontal outlook, not likely to be redevloped for houses (though you never know!), but probably gets busy on a Sunday! As for overpriced, drop it down around here, say in Farnham, and it would be up for £100-200K more than that.

Talking of gorgeous but tiny...mmm...Cara Dillon. Fantastic voice, good songs, pleasant banter, couldn't believe it wasn't sold out at only £10 a ticket. Spent another £10 on her 2nd CD, which she kindly autographed for me.

See you at Trowbridge!

Thumbs down Hmmmm ....

it also comes in a really tiny 12.5kg holdall thingy
But will never fit back in again after you have used it I reckon they're packed in a vacuum environment that you can never recreate.

Speedking, proud owner of a milletts tent kept in a holdall thingy and a carrier bag
