When we went last year, we used...
www.alamo.com
they were loads cheaper than any of the other "big names" we tried (Hertz, Dollar, etc).
If you take it back in the same state you hire it from, you don't get a one way charge. Our one way charge was more than the cost of the rental, but we did collect the car in Washington DC and drop it off at LAX!
Where abouts are you off to by the way?
John.

Try Holiday Autos.com
Get a price off the web then phone up, should get the same price and the info was better over the phone.
Need a couple of days in advance as you HAVE to take your voucher with you.
Get discount if through Barclaycard. Got some good deals last two times we went.

www.hotwire.com is good place to get cars from if you're not fussy as to what you're going to be driving. I've paid less than $20/day from there.

I'll second www.holidayautos.com , just used them for a weeks hire from Newark airport.
One tip i've discovered is I always book the cheapest car possible, and see what they'll upgrade me to when I get there. Usually it's very cheap to do this as they rarely have many of the smallest class of car and are keen for you to upgrade. This way I ended up paying £130, plus only $20 upgrade for the week to change from a economy class to a full sized Chevy Impala.

When we go, we always use Dollar (a lot to od with the fact that they have a desk in the Airport we fly into), but use the UK site, and not the US one, as it gives you cheaper rates as a tourist - www.dollar.co.uk
