Why are big companies so greedy ?
What is it with big banks, corporations and even individuals, why do companies like Macdonalds seem to exist purely for making more and more money, is it to ensure that the employees are well looked after, er dont think so. Why do you rarely hear about companies putting a bit back unless its a tax dodge or photo opportunity. It seems like a collective dellusion on the part of the management to acheive domination, like it actually matters whether you make 10 billion or 15 billion, I aggee that commerce is good and am not some kind of communist but thinks just seem to be so consumed in the pusuit of money.
Look at Robbie Williams, 80 million quid, why, whats he going to do with all that money, I could personally never have that much money at my disposal with wanting to get rid of it to charity, obviously you provide for yourself but do the big stars make many donations ?
Bill Gates is worth Billions, I know he does a bit for charity but didnt he say he was going to donate his Billions at some point, it doesnt seem to have arrived.
Surely there is a point where money is immaterial, the interest off the interest would keep you well provided for well beyond your lifespan ?
I am missing something here ?

Nobody enters the business world without the intention of making money. They get to a stage when its second nature to take every penny they can.
Personally though, I don't have a problem with people and big business making money. If they worked hard for it, they can have it.

firstly you'll find they all give massive sums away (although this is also good tax planning for them)
second......there is no such thing as too much.
go to african, find some kid that walk 5 miles for his water and ask him if new exhaust on your sports car is too much....or if swappimg your STi 7 for an STi 8 is a good plan. As far as Bill is concerned you are that kid walking for his water and he will no more slow down his domination of the market place for you than you would cut back from a 36inch TV to a 32inch one for our African mate!

People invest to retire comfortably & therefore want decent returns on strong investments - not below average from nice guys.
(Although you can invest in a ethically run third world sandal factory if you want to feel good - but can't guarantee you'd be able to afford a pair of them in retirement)

basically, as has been said above, business exists to make money. if you get to the satge where you think "£10B is enough, i don't think i'll bother trying to make £15B" you are at the stage where you either retire or your shareholders get rid of you. and it is quite common for big companies to give an amount of their profits as bonuses to employees when they do well. there was one company that did it the other day, forget the name, employees received between £800 and £3000, or something like that, depending on position and length of service.

Good program on the TV the other night about nigeria and the millions of barrels of oil that shell pump out of the place. The pipes keep leaking and destroying woods and farmland shell have to pay a total of zero pounds compensation. They did however give three hundred dollars to the local school. So is anyone going to stop using optimax becuase of this . Nope thought not. Lets face it people look after their own and in the most part don't give a **** about anyone else. Comic relief does not count. If everyone in the west made the choice to spend a little less on things they don't need and use that money to help the less well off around the world then poverty could be eradicated. The world is based on a philosophy of the rich being more important than the poor and since the rich have all the power this will never change.
"You will also find that they sell GM foods, destroy the environment in their quest for higher production and sales by cutting and clearing rain forests, dont pay fair wages or have a fair working environment for their workers, exploit many countries labour laws by suppressing workers organisations, and dismissing workers who go on strike, they make many work 20 hrs per day, recruit mainly temporary workers and as far as kids are concerned they target young children in multi-million pound advertising campaigns to promote their toxic products. Yeah, greed is good "
yeah but a nice big mac and chock shake makes up for that! mmmmmm...drive through!

that's the whole trouble with environmentalists - they like to make these big bogeymen and wave sticks at them. i'm sure MDs isn't the most ethical company in the world - by a long way. yeah they pay minimum wage etc etc etc. if MDs ceased to exist tomorrow - what difference would it make? jack sh*t, basically. our economic system is based on the profit motive, not looking after panda bears etc. mr panda bear is economically weak - so he's f*cked. if you want to change things, you gotta start a revolution.
so i'll see you on the barricades then, Jye?

but if the poor had all the power, there wouldn't be much incentive to get rich, would there?

btw - cut of your jib: top expression - should have been on the thread about expressions. kind of thing that my old man comes out with.

Rich is the man with empty glasshouse and a full packet of seed

Its not just McDonald, Manchester Airpot Authority changed all the security guards contracts so most left or ended up on 2/3rd of the money they were on, knock on is family men have to sell their houses and throw themselves on the mercy of thew council or get into debt, the Airport is run by the labour council so they end up footing the bill anyway, cant understand why people arent meant to earn a living wage ?
The Guards were on about eighteen grand, the new contracts put them on about 12 grand, so going from a happy workforce looking after our airport security we now have very p1ssed off security guards or muppets employed on the lower wage, the airport was in profit before and now is in even bigger profits, for what ?
Is it not possible for industry to pay a living wage unless you are in directorship, managemnt or have some technical skill they cant do without ?
