Default Telephone Scam??

Anyone heard of this, i don't know whether to believe it

We have just been made aware of the following telephone scam, which has been confirmed by BT. Unfortunately they can do nothing to stop it. Please read the details below...

There is a new kind of mobile phone scam. A missed call will show on your mobile phone. The number is 0709 020 3840! The last four numbers may vary, but the first four numbers will remain the same! If you call this number back, you will be charged £50.00 per minute. People have complained about their phone bills, once they have realised the cost of the call, but apparently this is completely legal.

So beware, do not call back numbers beginning with 0709.

I thought that all Premium rate numbers HAD to start with "09" now to stop people from being subject to this sort of thing?

Not quite, the limit on all numbers in the UK as regulated by Oftel is £1.50 a minute (I think), but this is a genuine scam, but not to the amounts quoted here.

Its a crock.

All 070 numbers are personal numbers - mobile phone, pager and 'find
me anywhere' numbers. They are typically charged at between 10p per
minute and 50p per minute.

not 100% crock.

I work for a big telco and the personal number ranges aren't supported by a lot of big carriers as they can charge pretty much whatever they want, but I find it difficult to believe a carrier would pass a call at £50 a min to any number, but £££'s a minute wouldn't be out of the question.

There was big scam few years back, guy buys few 07 numbers here, gets a nice rate from New York to UK numbers, sets his 07 number up to charge £3 a minute or whatever, rings it all day everyday over his "cheap rate" carrier from New York at 20p a minute, profit to him £2.80 a min, plus..... But don't try this as it's been stamped out and they will chase you if you succeed.... Plus most carriers don't support 07 when dialed outisde of UK.

I never call back missed calls anyhow, if they don't leave message, can't be too important!

My feelings exactly, 2000T!

If it's important, they'll leave a message. Only people I ring back if I've missed their call are family / friends - ie - known numbers.
