Question

Great news, my G reg Nissan Sunny 1.6 GL has just passed it's MOT which means I stand to get 3 years motoring out of £900. It's got 109,000 miles on the clock and starts first time every time! And of course no self respecting joy rider would be seen dead in it!!!

Only does 14 miles a day as a rule but is great for chucking all sorts of rubbish into to take to the tip.

What other bangers are out there being used and abused and left in dodgy places all day?

My lovely little Citroen AX called Kevin. Cost me £100, the MOT next week should (hopefully) only be another £300. Dad keeps nicking him when his car breaks down every week!

Mk2 Golf Gti, covered in dents and the infamous tailgate rust, I park in wherever I like without fear of damage and clashes with other cars bumpers and wing mirrors are just laughed off.

It still achieves 0-60 in less than 9 seconds and will do an indicated 120mph (don't believe that for one second!) where legal to do so.

Top cars and nobody is interested in stealing them anymore so I reckon I get the best of both worlds.

N reg peugeot 306 xrdt.... done 130k and bought off my better half when the audi dealer offered her 400 quid for it. Paid for itself by money saved on petrol doing boring motorway journeys already

i expect with a service tax and mot i could still sell it for a profit once finished with it...

Bought myself a nice little MY96 1.3 Escort Estate as a cheap run around last month. One lady owner only 60K on the clock. Not very fast (understatement), but practical for humping stuff around.

I had to visit some clients in Derby recently so I took the 'new motor' in place of the Scoob to get some cost comparisons. Drove 330 miles in total, cruising at between 70 - 80 mph and it didn't miss a beat all day, in spite of the ****ty weather conditions. The fuel guage didn't even move off Full for the first 60 miles.

So, total cost for petrol??.... Roughly 26 quid for the *whole* journey. At 40p a mile expenses I was able to claim enough to cover the cost of the petrol, tax for six months (just 60 quid), an oil and filter change, *and* a nice curry for supper. Superb.

And of course the other advantage of the station car is I don't care how many dent's it has in it so if anyone wants to get in a ruck at a roundabout I don't care I just stick to my guns and they have to wait...

I did the station car thing - first an Audi A3 1.6 with 90,000 miles, then a 205 GTI with the same, as it's a 35 mile round trip to the station I woke up and smelt the coffee and the station car is now a Golf R32 with 272bhp courtesy of AmD

What Dave fails to mention is that that is also his "performance" car (so doesn't count)

OK. How about an E reg Suzuki Alto? A rip roaring 30-40bhp of 770cc fire breathing triple cylinder tarmac tearing monster, known only as "The ****box"

I love a cheap car. I'm with Nacro, a Mk2 Golf GTi 8v. Still feels as tight, quick, squeak free and as sweet as ever, despite 120k miles.

GTi's always drove well, so driving one every day is completely painless. It carries breeze blocks, lengths of 5x2, and assorted builders rubble. I can do a days work and jump in it without worrying about the upholstery.

We go to the pub, dump it outside the door and don't bother locking it. If someone runs over it, spews up on it, or dumps a kebab on it, it doesn't matter. I go to Old Trafford in it, park in the tightest place where no-one dares to leave the Porsche or M3 for fear of door dings, and beat the traffic home.

I leave it outside my house in the street. If someone bends the aerial off, you get another coat hanger. If someone keys it, it matches the other scratches.

No monthly finance payments, no tracker payments, no servicing costs (a can of Duckhams once a year does the job), classic insurance and no depreciation.

Why do old cars seem to wash themselves? A good thrash in the rain and it looks clean again.

It has never had to come home on my trailer. My beutiful Mercedes SL500 (despite being pampered, polished, waxed and garaged) certainly has.

The Suzuki did need it's first replacement clutch about 6 years ago and I even had to replace a tyre in the last 8 years - 25 whole pounds!!! I think I changed the oil too about 5 years ago so it's due another one in a couple of years....

E reg 309, bought for £100 knicker on the nose with 110K on the clock. Starts first time, every time, if you give it loads of manual choke and gas first. I got 90mph out of it the other day (on a private road, of course).

Full MOT & taxed for 6 months. First 2 months I had it the insurance was free (I kid you not)!

I use one of those Subaru Impreza's, like a sort of Japanese mini cab with spoliers, you may have seen one. Perfect for leaving in badly lit station car parks as no one pays it a second glance, it keeps the dents and miles of my Maestro you see.

Well my Sunny is all back now. Took it round the block and it had developed this annoying squeak! Traced it to the aerial that was hanging on by a thread and scraping on the roof.

That'll teach me to get p1ssed on New Years Eve and use the roof of my car to get a better view of the surrounding fireworks! I snapped it as I jumped off!!!

I even paid my daughter 50p to wash it at the weekend!
