Have sampled such delights all over the UK, but still reckon that Birmingham gives the best nosh... the Kubashi (Moseley) is best for starters, and Luxor (Kings Norton) for main dishes. There's a nice restaurant in Alvechurch too.
Though the naan breads sampled in one in Ludlow recently, were a revelation! Garlic and chilli special. Stunk of garlic for days afterwards!

It's pretty cliche but the Tamarind near green park in london is fantastic...but very expensive..you pay for the Michelin star. THe chef left and opened Benares (sp) nearby which is also great.
My second favourite is some place up very close to Alton Towers..must dig out it's name..it was in a tiny village and had a grand name like *blank* Manor.

I've read some of the sites on the web, but I'm not really after being guided by decor, ambience etc. I just want to know where the best food is.
In my experience I prefer Pakistani restaurants rather than Indian. Hence I like Bradford, the Rusholme district of Manchester and a couple in Rochdale.
Just wodnered what you guys had found around the place as it's always useful when travelling round the country on business - beats the over rich pompous hotel food anyway.

Ahhhhh.... memories.... many a drunken student night in Rusholme!!!
There is a good Nepalese resturant in Fleet, Hampshire (I can't remember the name, but there is only one on the High Street)
I remember watching a Food programme a few years ago, where there was an Indian Resturant on Shaftesbury Avenue in the West End of London that won loads of awards (and it wasn't very expensive according to the review)

tiggers.....u from rochdale??? i ask because i had my engagement in the 'asia' restaraunt as my missus is from rochdale.
i have to say that alot of the time, in rusholme especially, the food tastes different every time i go to say the same place. which is why i go to a different restaraunt all the time. the main reason for this is because chefs are so easy to hire, that the restaraunts will just get rid off them one week to the next. found this out from a friend's brother who used to manage a place in rusholme
the best place's are in Bradford though......and another tip, always eat in the place's where you see asian families eating

Used to like The Indian Rendezvous in Hounslow. It has changed name recently, but seems pretty much unchanged with substantially the same menu. (Just across the road from Hounslow West Piccadilly Line Station). If you're stuck in a hotel at Heathrow, get on the Underground and head there.
Tiggers - As you prefer Pakistani, you'd find some good ones in Glasgow as well. Don't know of any to recommend, though.
The Taste of Raj in Congleton got the Curry Club "Best Indian Restaurant in the UK 2001" award. Thoroughly deserved, but it isn't a cheap evening out. A nice touch is that they use fresh local produce wherever possible.

Jee Jar Jees in Littleover Derby has won national awards.
I Have been to quite a few birmingham balti houses and places in lye and without fail every single meal has been dreadful had to send a meal back with a hair in it once so the Birmingham Curry myth is far from deserved in MHO.

I'll second any of those mentioned in Bradford.. the Naweb is ace and there's also one in Huddersfield. The Aagrah is also good in Shipley, guisley, Denby Dale, Sandal and Garforth.. Also there's a small place, crap decor, lovely staff near Penistone called the Indian Palace.. much recommended for a basic menu

Jee-Jah-Jees in Derby is pretty good. There was a Nepalese on the Gloucester Road in Bristol that was also excellent, near the Bristol Flyer (as was - this is 6 years ago) might have been called the Rajput.........
Don't think size is a good thing (necessarily) when it comes to these places. One place in Derby (not JJJ's !) was reputedly tested some years back and they found 6 different lots of male sperm in one of the curries.
Hope I didn't spoil anyone's supper.

My fave at the mo is The Spice Exchange in Cotteridge, B/ham. There are lots and lots of good curry houses in Brum, but as someone pointed out there is also a load of crap ones! Local knowledge rules i guess!
