Hi,
had a rare instance yesterday - I called the police on some speeders. Only the second time ive ever spoken to the police - the first time was when someone did a hit and run on my car and I got their numberplate (didnt stop the idiots trying to charge me with about a dozen false offences though!!!!). The other one was as follows.

Driving along dual carriageway 40 limit at about 10pm, some traffic about but not all that much. Renault Clio Sport 172 (not sure if thats exactly right, the one that looks a bit mean from the back) flies past maybe doing about 80 or 90, he swerves dangerously around a couple of cars ahead, undertaking. I thought ****, but left it. Then about 5 seconds later a white nova with blue viper stripes (i know! ****!) comes flying by as well, does about the same thing except looking more like a ****. As I was in a foul mood and I hate idiots in novas I called the police on em. I doubt the police saw them or did anything, but anyone else think that it was a horribly mean thing to do? They did come close to causing two accidents that I saw over about 1/4 mile, but then I see that everyday with idiot drivers bimbling about and dont report them....

TBH, would probably have done the same. I've called the police on a couple of occasions where I've felt the roads would be a little safer if said drivers were off them for a while to calm down.

Doubt the police could do anything though. We followed an OBVIOUSLY drunk man on the M25 a while back. It was very late / early morning and for once the M25 had minimal traffic. This chap was weaving all over the lanes at random and once he pulled off onto his slip road, was bouncing up the islands in the middle of the roads, hitting the kerbs and generally being a danger to himself and others.

We called the police and followed this chap at a discreet distance, keeping up a running commentary to the police. If nothing else, we could be on hand to call an ambulance if he did smack into something.

We followed him all the way home where he "parked" and then fell out of the driver's door onto the tarmac. Took him a few minutes to re-orientate himself and then he staggered into his house.

Of course, because he's now not in the vehicle, nothing can be done. The police simply said that they "had the man's details, thank you very much".

I phoned the police re a speeder a few years back. Italian plates, heading towards Dover, clearly in a massive hurry, as he was overtaking everywhere, swerving round people and using the hard shoulder. As I was doing 90+ in the inside lane at the time the road was obviously relatively clear anyway.

The polce said they'd be there and ten minutes later there was a Senator parked at the side of the road with an Alfa 164 ahead of it.

They do respond when they can but there aren't many of them. If those who knock the police for never turning up would consent to paying a little more for them through taxes this would not be the case.

Yeah right Gordo, so if i phone the police and just give the details of a car, they are really going to stop everything and hunt them down, what a ****, its people like you that say the police do nothing and are useless......what do you expect with *** jockeys like you phoning up!!
Im just trying to say that the ammount of people phoning up just to cause grief to someone they didnt like for example would be silly.....prank call central.

The police can and do respond to these calls. Bear in mind that there's extensive motrway camera coverage, so the controllers can see that you're not winding them up. Different on other roads obviosly.

And they've giot your mobile number, so making prank calls isn't the best idea.

And if they receive a few calls that day all commenting on the same car ? Your one call might not be enough but a few more might tip the balance towards action.
Don't bury your head in the sand like Shaolin and accept bad behaviour. If you don't tell them, they'll never know.
Lie down & ignore or stand up & be counted ?

Chris

I've done the same AND got a call back from the Police to thank me

We were travelling down south for a holiday, it was late, about 11.00pm. As it was summer there were a lot of caravans and families in cars on the road at the same time. All of a sudden, around Stafford, this tw@t come screaming up behind me and started swerving all over the road and breaking violently. He headed across some chevrons as if he'd missed his exit and came back on to the motorway swerving again. By this time he was in front of me and again broke sharply whilst crossing two lanes. I slowed right down to 50 end put some distance between us.

The next thing i saw was him slowing right down in the outside lane and swerving again, he then shot off across chevrons and up a slip road. I phoned 999 and told them the reg of the car, make and which junction he got off at.

The Police said they would try and get him. 10mins later i got a call back from the Police to say they had caught him and found him to be 10 times over the limit

The lady thanked me for ringing and advised me that the telephone conversation would be used as evidence against him and there could be a remote chance of me being called as a witness in court (which i didn't mind)

Just one more complete tosser that should be strung up taken off the streets if you ask me

Good on yer mate, why should you have your family put at risk through blatant acts of self destruction. <rant over>

Its your word against theirs, some kn#b who thought i had pinched his space at the petrol pump (Get a life)reported me to the local plod for dangerous driving, at a time when i could prove i was at home, just because i drove a nice car and he was peed off.
The best thing was the Police turned up and read me my rights before they asked 'was it you' and the like and better still they gave me the other parties complete details by mistake.

I was so annoyed that they even bothered listening to this idiot and the petrol station in question had kept the video tape of the guy threatening me with a hammer during his rant.
Guess what, they did F#CK all about him though.

I was only 17 at the time driving an Xr3i and he was some old git who was obviously in the right.

Brake fluid is not good on paintwork.......

Ohh and to back other people up GET A LIFE.

I got pulled by the police because someone reported me for dangerous driving on the motorway after I had dared to flash my lights at someone who thought that he should be driving in lane 3 when lanes 1 & 2 were clear for half a mile

They told me that they "have to respond" to calls like that even though they knew the bloke was a tosser because he "wouldn't give us any details".

Question

Do you call 999 or the local police station when reporting these?

Didn't call the police but quite proud of this one myself

Driving out of my village one afternoon and spotted plod's speed trap sitting in a 30mph zone catching traffic coming in other direction......

Went for a wee drive and whilst minding my own business this plonker in an orange Escort RS200 wanted to have a go ... he was sitting right on my tail ........

so

Pulled away and yup he gave chase...... you know what's coming

So headed into the village from the other direction hoping Mr Plod was still doing his stuff and just prior to the blind summit before the speed trap I slowed (ooops missed a gear ) at which point ned goes flying past and I have never enjoyed waving at someone so much as when I pottered past at 30mph as he was being nabbed

Made my day

Genius SiPie, glad of the replies, dont feel like quite so much of an evil swine now. I was aware that it was unlikely that the police would do anything about it but I thought that the car was distinctive enough and the road used for racing often enough that the car and driver were probably familiar to them.

LanciaChris,

The only thing I would question is your motives. When you saw the Clio you were annoyed, but decided to let it go. However, because the second vehicle was a Nova you then reported it.

So your complaint was not just about the speed and behaviour of a driver on the public road, but also because he was driving a Nova.

No worries mate - I'm exactly the same about 3 series BMW's particularly M3's

DISCLAIMER: For those with no sense of humour this post was meant at least some way in jest

I think possibly if it had been a good car I might not have reported it, but then again, dont know for sure. I can understand someone with one of those fast clios wanting to go for a good blast, and when I saw him go by I thought that it was just him blasting along, albiet in a stupid place to speed and driving dangerously.

When the nova came along as well, it was apparent that he was racing, I called it in then because one person blasting along is one thing, but two people racing is imho about fifty times more dangerous as it seems likely they are more tempted to push themselves beyond their ability.

Rumour has it I have exceeded speed limits in my time, but I wouldnt say I have ever put other drivers at risk. That said these days just overtaking seems to throw the typical british driver into a panic - that overtaking thread a while back said it all.
