What's the score here? (Not literally!)
If a vehicle driver were to accidentally knock someone who had crossed (well, usually sauntered in an arrogant sort of way) the road with the little red man still clearly showing, who would be liable? Do these sort of crossings have the same rules as zebra crossings?

AFAIK peds have right of way in ALL circumstances, best off just imagining youve done it and trying not to look at all like a muppet while smiling uncontrollably.
you can look but dont touch smacks true on this one...

I think the situation would be exactly the same as if the pedestrian had crossed where there was no crossing at all. i.e., unless there was evidence of driving dangerously/ recklessly/ too fast/ not paying due care and attention, the pedestrian would be at fault. Might be wrong though.
Here sausage side it's a punishable offece to cross at the red man (and the police will fine you for it). Such behaviour is regarded as unordentlich and a motorist is freely entitled to accelerate towards you should you do this. Any damage resulting to the car as a consequence must be paid for by the pedestrian. I kid you not
Edited to say that I thought the only time a pedestrian had clear right of way in the absence of a proper crossing was when crossing the path of a car turning from a major into a minor road. Again, this may be bishop

I was told otherwise, after knocking a guy down approaching the Elephant & Castle roundabout in London
He ran across 3 lanes of traffic as I pulled into the filter lane to turn left, he slowed down his running as there were railings
I hit him with the passenger side of my wing and launched him into the railings, where he ultimatly ended up in hospital for several weeks
The Police said he was totally at fault, as he ran across the road above a pedestrian subway, and I could have sued him for damamge to my scoob & stress for me
many many witnessess, also a daily occurence on that roundabout approach too
I didnt press any charges, as I was just glad that he survived, and finally remembered who he was
Head Arm & Leg injuries, was not nice at all

I don't think it's a matter (morally) of who's wrong or who is right. If a driver "brushes" a pedestrian he's wrong whatever the circumstances. Unless of course the pedestrian deliberatly engineers the situation. I err on the side of extreme caution around crossings and whenever I see someone who looks like they are going to do something stupid. After all we are all pedestrians at some point and we've all done things we shouldn't.
Drivers need to exercise responsibility regardless of who's in the right- after all you could kill someone.

Fair point NACRO, it's the arrogant idiots who really annoy me, with their sort of "your car won't hurt me mister, look how close i can get to it, make sure you slow down for me, aren't i the brave one?" look on their faces.

Best way is to swivel your windscreen washers round and use them as an in-car water pistol. If you happen to drive a merc you even have the "sights" facility to line up your shot.
And nothing illegal about it at all, provided you stick to water in the washer bottle. I believe that the legality of sulphuric acid is questionable.

Hmm, true, but i try and avoid that, and in any case, that usually provokes the "swivel on it" middle finger gesture, which just makes me want to park up and go and punch their bloody lights out, which probably wouldn't help the situation...

Look at it another way hitting them might end up damaging your car. If you want to make it physical get out and confront them next time. At least that way the car will be safe and things will be on an even keel.
I'm resolved not to become involved in road rage since I had some maniac try to kill me using his car! He missed and got pulled out of his car and given a dressing down in front of his wife for his pains.

I got brushed once by a car on a pedestrian crossing. Guy in his 40's was at the crossing revving his engine and edging forward. Obviously in a hurry I wasn't so I slowed down coz his behaviour totally annoyed me.
Then he just went for it and clipped the bag I was carrying. I reported it to the police (could have got independant witnesses as well) who went round and gave him a stern talking to.
Of course that was in the days when we had policemen!!!

OK - So you see a red light and decide to go for it. You get wiped in the process. Was it your fault or the guy going through the green light?
Now explain why this would be different if you are a pedestrian?
I say run the fekers down.... every last one of them.... I don't walk further than halfway down the drive, and my 99 year old granny smells of wee and has been praying that she gets knocked down for the last 22 years
