I use a Daystate LR90 zeroised for 40 yards, it will kill a rabbit at this range. I use flat head pellets as they cause the most damage and in the right spot will kill instantly.

Following on from the comedy sparrow killing thread:

A friend has got a rabbit problem (note, not a problem rabbit, that would be silly) - his garden merges into woodland and is gradually being over-run.

He's after a humane way of removing (I interpret this as killing!) the carrot munching little blighters. Is an air rifle the way to go? and, if so, which one?

p.s. the sad git is boasting of a marksman's badge from the air cadets or something - suspect his right hand and internet access may have affected his eyesight since, mind.....

Gordo,

This is simple - guns are not required.

Make up a plate of ham toasties and leave them out for the rabbits. Do the same thing every night for a week, but then the following week leave them a plate of cheese toasties.

Guarantee they'll all be dead by the end of the second week.

Regards,

tiggers.

Mixing me toasties!!

Sorry - I couldn't resist. Got a guy down my local pub with that one about 3 years ago only kept him going for three days. I actually think he was making plates of toasties for at least two nights - couldn't watch him suffer for any longer - he took it well though and only blacked one of my eyes ;-)

Regards,

tiggers

A airgun in .177 or .22 calibre (4.5 and 5.5 mm ) will do the job if its power is right up at the maximum level allowed without a FireArmsCertificate)
I think thats 12 ft/lbs in england.

Dont go for the chest try and hit them in the temple area.
Do NOT use pointed pellets but domed ones (The pointed ones go right through if u miss the temple causing a lot of pain before they die) a domed 1 shocks them more.

as above - pointed pellets can pass straight through - whereas a domed pellet will come to a stop, thus expending all it's energy in Mr soon to be dead bunny rabbit.

Don't slot em' when there too close to the rabbit holes either - they instinctiveley leg down the holes in fright, shot or not.

Jolly good fun al the same

like you say, it depends a bit on the range - 12ftlbs in .22, I would say no more than 25 - 30 yds.

I always preffered .177 with heavy pellets, you get a flatter trajectory and you can get a bit more range if your'e confident for a head shot, this depends on the rifle and your ability with it though.

Thre's a guy selling a .22 theoben in for sale - this would do it niceley.

i used to have a daystate - the one with the brass air cylinder - it was like the royal tournament dragging it round the feild - accurate though, striking matches at 30 yds, no probs

For general bunny problem an airgun will do the job just fine.

You can get a spring gun for next to nothing, or a Pre Charge for a few hundred pounds.

I would recommend going to your local shop and trying a few rifles.

mj, I find the LR90 just the right weight and one of the most accurate air rifles I have used. Just curious what model you had.

Rapid MKII or Daystate MKIII are top of the range.

I hysr bought a harrier X, but I prefer my .308 sniper rifle myself
