Here in Portugal, annual road tax varies according to your engine size (bigger - more pricey) and the age of your car (newer - more pricey). For a car with an engine of more than 3500cc, less than 6 years old, you pay 329.
So, to tax my 1987 motorised biscuit tin (sorry, 900cc Seat Marbella) for a year, I've just coughed up... wait for it....
4.99!

Oh, plus 0.12 for the application form, so 5.11 in all!
It's no wonder the roads are so bad round here!!!

They don't actually spend road tax money on the roads in Portugal and Spain either.
We pay for their roads to be built through EC grants
Once built with our money, the governement sells them to toll road companies

Hence the low cost of car ownership in Portugal.

Pete - you sort of forgot the tax you have to pay when buying a new car, again based on engine size.
My 2.0 RAV4; price without taxes 26 000. + VAT @ 19% =31 000 (ish). Price to the public after adding new car tax - 41 000.
A 1.8 Caterham Roadsport here is over 50 000
