Gov to back 2012 Olympics.
Government has said it will wholeheartedly back the 2012 Olympic bid for London. The cost will be £2.5 billion. This will be partly funded by a new lottery game and by imposing a £20.00 annual surcharge on council tax on people living in London.
Thought it may be better to invest in things like hospitals and schools myself.
And if its anything like their last big project(the Dome) then we can expect a real **** up again.
Chip.

Just think...if everybody put £20 in the kitty...think how many hit men could be hired and how many MPs wiped out......
What a waste of time+cash
can u imagine the state of it- londons bad enough anyway-let alone with god knows how many visitors for that.
I can see it now- athletes missing their events because of signal problem at Edgeware rd on the district line....
lol

On the other hand, there is lots of money to be made from the Olympics - hotels, food sales, travel sales etc. So it's really a big money maker - but not for Joe public.
Instead of charging Londoners, how about charging private companies that stand to make money out of the Olympics.
Still rather have public money spent on schools, hospitals etc. though

So we rebuild Wembley right on the sight of the old one, with the same crappy access. Then we build an Olympic Stadium somewhere else.
Do we really need all these big venues in one part of the country and what will the "National Stadium" be?

Londoners will fund the cost so when/if it makes a profit will they get their money back with a dividend on top? Will they hell, all they'll get is some more tax demands to pay for the upkeep of the stuff built for the olympics. Another Labour rip-off. I know the tories started it but remember the dome anyone?
Nacro,
Granted the Tories started the Dome but they'd have run it on the lines of a business unlike Blairs mob who just wanted everything to be politically correct.
Here in Cardif we have the Millenium stadium. If it wasnt for the fact that Wembley matches have been transferred here then the place would hardly be used. Its also about £60m in debt after 4 years.
How often will Wembley be used to recoup the £1Bn spent building it when there is yet another stadium just a few miles away. Only went to Wembley once to a concert and the traffic, parking and organisation was ****e.

The dome would be part of it as the Gymnastics venue
Gotta be the most expensive Gymnasium in history.
I agree it's a waste of time and money. They have no chance of winning. It's just going to be a big corporate knees-up for Ken and his cronies paid for by hard working Londoners.

Remind me to move in 2011.
That's gonna be fun. The tube, overground rail and roads can't cope with the volume of use now.
Waste of fooking money. Is it possible to 'opt out' of paying for it if you promise not to watch it on tv?!
As ever, London get all the investment and facilities.........
The bid will probably be fukced up anyway.

The facilities, not just the sports venues, but the travel facilities, accommodation etc will be left as a legacy to Londoners - that's what they'll get for the extra £20 a year. It's not just to stage the Olympics. Look how Barcelona was revived by staging them!

Not all Londoners are going to be paying it though from what I understand. Fact is they won't recoup their investment and the transport will, as is usual in the UK, be overpriced, overcrowded and unreliable.
As was said earlier it will be a big cakewalk for phony Tonies cronies and Ken.

As an analogy, this is like someone buying a new car when they can't even afford proper food and clothing. This country needs to sort out the basics first before committing money to luxuries. We have bad schools, hospitals, public transport etc etc..
Am I being too simplistic here? In my mind it's just the basics that most reasonable people are taught. You sort out the important things first. Once you have that foundation sorted it gives you something to build on. You've earned the right to the extras. This is what this country needs to concentrate on first.
In my opinion

£20 a year for 6 years is just for the bid, not the cost of holding the olympics.
Given there are 10 million households paying the extra, thats 1.2 billion over 6 years. Where is the extra 1.3 billion coming from to cover the 2.5 billion bid cost? Lottery tickets, they say - would you buy any?
Colin.
