I keep being spammed with porno email on my one account - been in touch with the ISP ('bout as useful as a one-legged man in an ar$e kicking contest!!!) - no use....

I'm using Outlook Express 5.... are there any functions I cna use to 'filter' out this type of mail?

I can't remember about filtering, but simply blocking the address probably won't work. Most spammers use fake e-mail addresses to get around this very thing.

Also, the main thing to remember is that most spammers work on random addresses at first. Never, EVER click on the "click here to remove your address" line in the e-mail. All is does is to confirm your address exists and the amount of spam you receive in future will triple.

Couple of last points. Try and pick a very unlikely or unusually e-mail address, as it's more unlikely that your address will be 'guessed' when spam is being sent out.

The last thing is to be very cautious where you enter your address on websites etc. If possible just make up an address, unless you need to receive something from the company in question.

HTH,

Simon.

Tools menu...message rules....

Some folk have set things so that they only receive if sending ISP is {NOT hotmail or yahoo} OR {in address book}.

Trying to be selective is the tricky bit, whilst not losing real messages. Easiest way can be the delete button and you can tell from the subject line.

I find that most of the spam I receive doesn't actually have my name in the 'to:' or 'cc:' fields - they're usually blank or contain other addresses instead. So I set a filter to identify any message that doesn't specify my exact email address, and marks it as read and transfers it into a junk folder.

Fortunately I have ADSL, so downloading the spam as well doesn't cost me anything - I just periodically check through the junk folder for anything that might have been caught up in there by mistake, and empty it out. But it's just as easy to get the filter to delete it from the server without downloading instead.

Tips:
- make sure you also filter on the names of any mailing lists you want to receive messages from, if any. So, for example, you might want to pick up on anything addressed to 'subscribers@free-track-days.com', and keep it.
- if you have any filters that refer to the contents of messages, as opposed to just the headers, then Outlook Express has to download them anyway. So even if your rule then says not to download the message from the server, it's too late. You don't get a warning that this has happened.

Hope that helps,
Andy.

The other thing is to create a 'rubbish' folder and add a filter that puts all messages that don't have your email address in the To or CC.

OK, a few people may BCC you in but most of the stuff that ends up in my 'rubbish' is spam. Just check it and delete once a week.

Of course, if you use multiple addresses forwarded to one account, you have a bit more work to do!

Usually pointless contacting your own ISP, unless the spam originates there. Sign up for the free service on
