i see where u r coming from and this is how I bid for things. But one of my colleagues agrees on bidding for it even if it has x amount of hours or days left.. I have tried explaining this way, but still believes that his way is better.
its the only way to buy on ebay. snipe in, in the last few seconds and be a real barsteward. got me season 1,2 and 3 of the sopranos like that last night 30 quid each well chuffed.

I've only ever bought one item, well four wheels and tyres
I won the auction with less than five minutes to go

I did however chuck a big bid in earlier in the week and prolly cost miself an extra fifty quid

Perhaps they just want it more than you, or can't be assed to log back on their PCs with a few minutes left, lessening the chances of a win. If you bid last minute and someone has left a proxy bid then you may well miss out, or pay way more than you thought you would have to to win the auction.
Then again, I'm a fan of last minute bidding where possible!
If other people want to bid different then let them.
