i was looking at an item on ebay i wanted, this afternoon it was £200 with 8 days to go. i expect it to end up about £500.

just looked at its now £480!!!! why do ppl bid up the price with so long left? why not put a note in your diary and come back 10mins before auction end and get a bargain?

Wink

the first person to bid might have put £470 maximum so the second would have to beat that hence £480 - they might have wanted to get a higher bid in before going on holiday for a week

i see where u r coming from and this is how I bid for things. But one of my colleagues agrees on bidding for it even if it has x amount of hours or days left.. I have tried explaining this way, but still believes that his way is better.

well give him a slap! all it does shoves the price up and up, if you are prepared to pay X then why disclose it so soon...it simply gives time for ppl to pluck up courage to outbid you!

I've only ever bought one item, well four wheels and tyres I won the auction with less than five minutes to go

I did however chuck a big bid in earlier in the week and prolly cost miself an extra fifty quid

Not necessarily.I've sold loads of stuff on ebay and the pattern varies.I've sold stuff thats gone up from £300 to £1100 during the last few hours,i've also sold stuff that had a high bid on day one and sold at that price 7 days later.Sometimes a high early bid puts people off.

Perhaps they just want it more than you, or can't be assed to log back on their PCs with a few minutes left, lessening the chances of a win. If you bid last minute and someone has left a proxy bid then you may well miss out, or pay way more than you thought you would have to to win the auction.

Then again, I'm a fan of last minute bidding where possible! If other people want to bid different then let them.
