First thing i tried... but

Setup cannot be run from dos

WTF??? Apparently you can make bootup disks from the bootdisk dir on the cd, but for some reason my perfectly legit CD doesnt have this directory.

i have used this cd to upgrade from 98 before.. no probs, but i havent even got a 98 cd to install 98 first.

Hi,

If it's the full W2kPro CD then it should be bootable, set your BIOS to have the CD-ROM as the first boot device and switch on, then follow the screens

If it's the upgrade then you WILL need to install W98 first. Just do a simple install, de-select any options you can and get it running. That way the full install only takes around 20 minutes. Then boot-up, insert the W2k CD-ROM and watch.

Hope this is of help

If you do have an win 2000 upgrade disk you don't have to install win 98 first, just put win 2000 disk into drive after you've reformatted disk then type setup as normal then it will start to load.

During the process it will ask for a copy of win 98 just to check you own a copy (as your win 2000 is just an upgrade) then sit back and wait while it loads........

Much quicker and cleaner install.....

That wouldn't work, said setup can only be run from within windows. Anyway, I've got a 98 disk and done it now anyway. Now i have a new problem

When i start my pc the Memory check just keeps running, gets to 256k and then starts again, i press ESC to skip the memory check and it comes up witht the following message :

Primary IDE Channel no 80 conductor cable installed.. Anybody tell me what this means???

Windows still loads but it cant be right

PS. I have a 20gb primary witha 6gb. The 20gb is running dual boot with win98 and 2000 pro.

Any help gratefully recieved.

Cheers

Andy,

have you tried removing the 6GB (presumably a slave drive) - it could be jumper settings on the disk(s)?

Set your bios to boot from CD first (providing you do have a full version of the OS to install)

Check what mode your Harddrive is set to. You need a 80pin-conductor cable which should come with new drives, this is required if you are using Ultra DMA modes above 2. Modes 0, 1 and 2, covering transfer speeds up to 33.3 MB/s is optional but you might as well.

Also check if it is ATA66 or ATA33 device. This error probably comes up if you have ATA66 & ATA33 devices on the same cable. Doing this will make the ATA66 device run at ATA33 which you dont want, use separate cables.
