easier than that, ask for a reference from their bank and also ask to see a credit card for ID.

write off to experian enclosing a cheque for 2 pounds and they should send you the credit file you want which will show you any credit aggrements they have entered in to if they have missed any payments or if they have any ccj's against their name.
experian
consumer help service
po box 8000

or go to the website at

You need to write to Equifax as well as Experian as they hold different stuff. Not sure that they will give out other peoples info though?
Again a £2.00 cheque is required.
Equifax plc
Consumer Response Centre
Department 2E
PO Box 3001
Glasgow
G81 2DT
Its worth having a look at your own files. Just got a copy of mine.....riddled with errors!!!!

Wow....... that's all a bit big brother isn't it.
I can appreciate the need for finance companies to credit check, but the thought that Joe Bloggs could get a full credit history on myself I find all together disturbing.

You can only get a copy of your own credit report I belive. I checked mine with Experian and it was in error, so I'd definately get your own checked out.
Here's an idea > for letting the house, set yourself up as a limited company. That way I'm sure there'll be a way to do a credit check via Experian / Equifax.

I'm not 100% sure but I think if you bung the bank a coupla ton they'll sort out what you need.
ASAIK, the advantages are you get to pay business tax, instead of income tax, and if you do things right you can end up with zero profit and no tax at all. Very advantagous if your in the higher rate tax band.
Disadvantages, my guess would be the admin involved, might be a bit tricky to get on top of initially.
I'm afraid I don't know all that much about it as I've not done it myself, but a friend of old informed me once that for the sake of the setup cost and admin, it worked out much better than being classed as 'self-employed' or simply having a 'second income'.
