Dave,
Is it one of those Precision 330 ? Or the home version ?
If its the Precision, I got one too But I've got the nVidia Quadro 2 graphics for games.. er I mean fast graphical rendering which is so important in my work, honest boss
Cheers

....got it direct from Dell, we only use Dells in the office, so ordered it via our company account, I don't have to pay the VAT and can offset it against my gross bonus so for a £3100 machine I pay £1570
It's the Dimension 8100 - in black and silver - the pics look cool
Only got a BT landline unfortunately.....in the sticks, no cable, ADSL is still effectively a myth and refuse to pay silly BT prices for ISDN
BTW it was Carolyn's idea to change the PC.....hehehe
Yeah I know it will be obsolete in 6 months...that's half the fun
Two reasons to change - only got a small desk in the study and currently got a 19" monitor on it that takes up too much space, so ordered a 17" flat panel, and having used NT4 at home with previous PC, and currently using Windoze 98 which I think is crap, looking forward to using W2000 (after about service pack 4....... )

Sorry Dave, didn't make the connection, i.e. has to be a Dell for company account, Dells don't make Athlons. My second (old) machine is a Dell, been totally reliable for 2.5 years, and real easy to open up and tinker with.
Cheers,
Gary.

The P4 will get a boost once the OS's and software are properly coded to use its abilities.
However, by the time they are truly optimised to use it, you will be using Px's or something else.
Exactly the same as what happens in the graphics market, new cards have loads of bells and whistles on them, but the real selling point is always raw processing power to those who know.
Why spend £350 on the best card now, which isnt properly utilised, when in a year it will be £100 tops, and only then just really starting to use the stuff that aint used now?
Its what killed 3Dfx more than anything else, they forgot what made them great (raw power) and assumed that people had enough raw power and needed more clever stuff. Nvidia came along and blew 3dfx out of the water with processing power. 3dfx are no more.
The P4 will be very fast when the processing speeds are scaled up to what they should be. Its not the chip now that it will be in the future, its got a very long pipeline, and that needs high MHz to be really powerful. The logic prediction unit is VERY good and this helps to cover the weaknesses of the chip as it is now.

nice pc dave
i'm still chugging along with a p3 667 !
with that sort of pc you should be joining us for a game of Counter-Strike on a tuesday nite.
would be very educational to hear you tell us many fps and how well it renders the complex graphical intricacies and such like from such a high spec system - oh and you might even enjoy the 'game', not that you use such a high spec pc for such trivialities
i've just inherited a 19" dell monitor as the outlaws are Dell people and he's just bought a new dell 19" flat panel !
cheers

I recently got a P4 specific compiler from Compaq. OK, its Fortran, but that is my work. Code complied with this runs a 'bit' quicker than the same code on the P3 or below compiler. Surprised ? I was a bit. (When I say 'bit', I actually mean, fugging huge difference, approx. 35% increase).
Most of the benchmarks programs used at the moment do not take into account the P4 architecture hence they always come out slower than the P3/Athlons etc.
Word is that Beta2 of Windows XP (any day now) will have the necessary low level code to deal with the P4. So we will just have to wait and see.

That's what you're spending your money on
Why not opt for a Matrox Millenium G450 or similar & have 2x Flat Panel screens on your desk - cooler still [/quote]
PTMW!
Nudge nudge oh, I getcha
The PC doesn't have to be paid for until April 2002 - that's when they divvy up my account at work - that's why I didn't spend the money on something else now mate

W2K is definitely the way to go if you don't want your PC crashing every 5 mins. Used it at work for quite a while, got it at home on my PC (2x550 PIIIs, 384MB, DVD etc). Only bombed once from what I remember. Acxtually leave it turned on most of the time. The only problem that I have is sometimes the modem goes away and I have to reboot. But that's about once a week.
My Bruv got himself as Tiny setup - 1.2squillion Mhz, CD-RW, etc ect. 'So, Dave, is it right that it locks up several times per day and I have to reboot..??'. Running ME.
'Nuff said.
Dave
PS: I'm also running SP1 plus Office 2K with SP1...

You may well be right mate.....but I don't think Freeserve/PhotoSuite and so on support it........
