I tried to connect to your server last night, (To practice running in straight lines without being shot all the time ) but as soon as I got the Initialising & Downloading message, C/S quit and dumped me back to the Desktop.

I authenticated OK and was connecting to other C/S servers without Hiccups.

Is this connected or any other ideas ?

Folks,

there is a huge update to both Half-life and Counter-strike which is planned for tonight/tomorrow. I have the server code for CS already but not for HL as it hasn't yet been released.

The client for the MOD version of CS will be released soon (IE today at some point) and the Retail version of CS will be updated the day after.

Bearing in mind that CS alone will be another 30odd MB download and you will need to update Half-life. I think it would be better to skip this weeks session and plan to try again next week.

The reason I'm suggesting this is that as soon as valve decide to switch over to the new version nobody will be able to connect to an old server so timing is critical... WON authentication bites big time

Sorry about that, but at least it's not my fault

If people want to risk not being able to connect I'll have the server up and running the old version tonight but I can't guarantee WON will allow you to connect.

what is WON exactly ? Why is it needed if we are connecting direct to your server ?

I downloaded CS therefore I assume I have the CS MOD as opposed to the retail version. 1.1 is supposed to be out today at 2PM and the HL release out at 4PM today.

So if they are on the ball and release the code I should be OK for tonight ?

No code released just yet..does this mean we'll all be ok for tonite ? presumably they won't flick any server switches until people have a chance of downloading an update ?

if 2PM is US time then this is 1AM ours ?

i understand its not around til 2pm PST time which must be much later tonite for us in the UK ?

therefore i suggest you get the server up and we play if we can using existing version 1.0 ?

i'm not sure wot affect on WON this release might / might not have 2nite ?

i've supposedly got 3 people ready for tonite so lets at least give it a try after the last 2 failures !!

I get the same problem as DSMITH - It connects, downloads then dumps me back to Desktop - this is the first time I've ever tried to play CS apart from the Training missions, I'm using the retail version

Any Ideas?????

try any other server to see if you can connect.

I too connected for a while, got shot lots, managed to get one kill though!!

Had to go briefly but now can't re-connect, but it says zero players so it does'nt matter.

Must get out of the UT play mode though, wade in guns blazing......DOH!! Dead again....

I have to say I have spent a couple of evenings playing C/S now and I do enjoy it. I find it a bit easier to compensate for a poor ping than UT (and poor skill ? ). By sneaking around you can pick people off, rather than having to go head to head all the time.

I do feel sorry for some of the hostages when they see an inept counter terrorist spend five minutes going round in circles and never actually finding the door that leads to them

How do people run, jump, aim, shoot and send loads of radio messages all at the sme time. I swear some people have three hands.

Just as I connected, wifey came home and i needed to move cars, feed baby etc. By the time I finished I had a few customers to deal with and when they were done - hey its gone midnight !

Its not really my scene to be honest - prefer to "Dr Hu" it - wade in guns blazing on the wed UT

Sorry about that hiccup, it's always interesting when valve and the cs team release updates together. You should all have been able to connect to my V1 server last night and I have no idea why the people who were having troubles suffered.

I've upgraded the server to 1.1 now and will test it when the hl client is officially released.

Good news is that you will need to do a total of about 60MB downloading if you want to carry on playing CS... gotta love the crew from valve for that

I won't be around for a few tuesdays as I'm out from 18:30 till 22:00 for the next four weeks but I hope to see you all after that.

Oh PS Lee - WON is the company responsible for authenticating your CD keys and versions before you connect to the server.

well there will be a few of us there next tuesday all ready and patched up at 7:30pm.

CS is a gaming revelation in my opinion. so much better than any previous team orientated FPS's.

And yes is does take a fair bit of time to get out of the 'Dr Hu' (Copyrite Dr Hu 2001 ) mode cos that only gets u killed very quickly.

other key point to unlearn is to simply press the fire button and hold it down !!! most weapons react very badly to that and 95% of your bullets will not be anywhere near the intended target !!! you have to learn to fire in bursts, always re-adjusting your aim to the target.

takes time but rewards you when you start to get it right.

Dr Hu - u talking Zero players showing in gamespy ? cos if so i was getting the same thing last nite - ping 9999 and no one on the server even though there were !

have a good UT game 2nite guys but make sure you give CS a chance - can so many thousand people really be wrong !

right gotta go start downloading 1.1 !

I can't believe I went out a bought Half Life AGAIN to get the Counter Strike CD without an 82MB download only for a week later Valve to say sorry chaps another 60Mb download if you want to keep playing - like we ALL have broadband don't we - NOT!

i've only a 56k link but its no problem downloading large files, esp with Getright ?

CS 1.1 - 19meg and HL 06 update - 12meg. took no time at all, just left if going and watched tv instead !

i'm with BT - pay the 9.99 a month for free evening and weekend access.

upgrading automatically at the end of this month to 14.99 per month for 24/7 free access.

2 hour limit on single call, but never a problem re-connecting and not a download problem with get right.

OK on Friday I got HalfLife Generation from Electronic Boutique, it is the "latest" and contains CS and Fortess something or other.
It cost £16.47 on a VAT free offer.

I have never played it, in fact I haven't even installed it yet. To take part in these shenanigans what else do I need?

Oh and when is the next one?

Sounds like the pack I bought, unfortunately there was a large Patch released last week or the week before. I doubt its made its way into a retail version yet but I could be wrong.....

Assuming the CD contains the 1 week out-of-date Retail version of C/S. (If you have a specific S/N for Counter/Strike and a different one for Half-Life then I'mm 99% sure this means it is the Retails Ver.)

The C/S 1.1 Retail Upgrade Patch @ 19Mb
And It can't hurt to have the "Missing Map Pack" to bring the reatil version fully in line with the Mod Version - another 17Mb

be nice to see a few people finally turn up ! we seem to keep getting it wrong for one reason or another.

as long as you have get right, downloading the patches is no problem.

just make sure you are getting the Retail Version Patch and not the Mod patch.

you are also likely to / definitely will need the latest Half-Life 06 patch which came out the same week as CS 1.1. its another 11 meg ?

Checked my box last night. It was Half-Life generation I bought. This actually installs CounterStrike in a completey separate manner from Half-Life with its own dedicated copy of the Half-Life engine. If you want to play Half-Life on-line you will need the Half-Life patch. You won't need it for just C/S though....

I seem to remember now why I bought a playstation. Buy the disc once and it always works....

Well, if I can get enough space on the HDD and download all this patch caper, then I might see you tonight, albeit fleetingly as I will have no idea what I'm doing. But I'm a quick learner so watch out next time.
