Hi guys,
My company wants me to become a beardy, sandle wearing, tartan tank top, glasses, and use a pocket protector for my pens!! (No offense!!)
They want me to learn Sun Solaris!!
I was wondering if anyone could recommend any books, websites or where I could get a cheap copy of Solaris for Intel??
Any help would be good
Thanks
Andy

Andy,
Check with Sun directly, I could have sworn I read something a while back saying they were going to give it away for free.
Solaris is a great OS - you'll love it
Regards,
Gary.

Thanks Gary, I'll have a look.
I'm a Microsoft boy at heart!!! I'm happy working with an unreliable operating system that will keep me in work for the rest of my life!!!
But when it comes to spending £60k on hardware for each project, the Intel stuff and the Sun kit is about the same, so which operating system would you use!!!!???!
Andy
PS - I'm looking forward to getting my pocket protector, and the plaster for glasses!!

Andy T,
Alternatively, I'd recommend the O'Reilly books and for reference books you can't beat the XXXX in a nutshell range, be it for unix, java, c or the like..
And if you get stuck, email me, been working with/on/above&beyond solaris for 7 yrs now, have worked at Sun for 4 yrs now.
rgds, Alex

PS.
Look at the prenticehall range too, a lot of books written by X and current Sun employees...
Ones to look at when you've got the grip of basic/intermediate sys admin:
Panic! crash dump analysis (By Kimberley Brown & co)
Web Server Capacity Planning (words to that effect, by Brian Wong)
Ultimately, get yourself on Sys Admin 1 at least run by Sun Education, the sun training courses are the best and quickiest way to learn.. oh, and if you dont know unix at all, get on the Solaris for users course first, makes a big difference...
Or pay me loads and I'll teach you
Cheers, Alex

Alex,
You're good, very good!!! Cheers!
Oh does that mean I'm learning the wrong type of UNIX to wear broken glasses!!! Damn!!
So if you go out drinking with the Sun boys, you have to beat up other UNIX users!!! Seems a bit extreme, but at least they come round to your way of thinking!!!
Andy
PS - see you on Sunday! Oh and if I'm in a tank top or have broken glasses, beat the crap out of me!!!!

60 grand on hardware for every project! Erm, 30 odd grand will buy you a pretty big Sun box, i.e. Enterprise 420R, 4xCPUs, 2Gb ram, 2x18Gb disks, redundant PSUs etc. Most of the stuff is fairly reasonably priced and lets face it a Sun is a fair bit better than an wIntel box
Good resources...

Andy,
I have the Solaris8 media kit for Intel, you are welcome to a copy.
I'm currently benchmarking it against FreeBSD and Linux (again, copies on request )
The Slowaris term only applies to Intel - on SPARC hardware it rocks..then again, on intel its hardly a slouch either !

Thanks Lee,
I've just ordered the media kits for Intel and SPARC, both of which the company is paying for.
Intel for my machine at work, and the SPARC workstation I borrowed off a friend for home. At the moment it's really just to learn the basics as it's been a while since I've used something that isn't GUI based!!!
Mat,
With the recent move into our Business Intelligence Group, I've had to learn a lot more about Broadvision, Oracle, SAS, Netscape Enterprise Server and Solaris.
Although a majority of this or an equivalent, can run on NT, who would???
Each project will probably multi-million, and half of that is spent on hardware and licenses!!!!
Thanks for the help guys

It still sucks CPU-wise, although SMP boxes are ok, Sparcs are the dangly bits on IO performance
If you want some real grunt under the lid go and buy a DEC (sorry, erm Compaq ) Alpha box yummy yummy

Not really surprising though is it ?
The "old" cost of Solaris made it prohibitive for small companies to run, by doing this they are competing directly with Linux who they probably see as their biggest competitor to MS. It started off when they offered Solaris free for developers..
And the 8 cpu thing..I read that as "Sorry if you aint got 8 cpu's in yer box you are too smallfry to worry about"
