Hi Guys
Have now had my Playstation2 for 2 hours and am one very happy bunny.
Bought 2 games with it Ridge Racer V and Tekken Tag, Tekken is absolutely gorgeous both visually and the way it plays, Ridge I've just looked at visually quite sweet haven't played enough yet to give an opinion .
Dvd side of things seem very good, although checked on downstairs TV (a Sony one) colours and general clarity of picture are comparable with my pioneer 525. Will connect it all up in the attic tomorrow and see what the Dolby digital and Dts are like, will also try a few "difficult" disc, IIRC bond ones and matrix are.

What other games were available at launch? I have a policy of not buying a colsole until a decent football game is released.
Graphics, are they up to PC standards for the games? Lots of color?
Let us know how it copes with DVD, as I was not expecting much from it.

Does the PS2 have built-in DTS/DDigital decoders or do you connect it to your amp via optical lead ?
I'd imagine if you offloaded the decoding to your amp, I shouldn't think the PS2 will really have any effect on it's quality (as it's just passing the digital signal along)
Or perhaps I'm rambling like a fool.

Also picked up my PS2 this morning
got SSX and TimeSplitters.... £44.99 each (ouch!) and a memory card (£27.99!)
Won't get to run the machine till tonight though.
EB had loads of games.
The bloody thing is sitting on my desk..in its box, it's driving me mad

Just picked up one from EB Croydon, 1hr queue and they ve been open since 7.30am
No queues in HMV or Virgin or Dixoms!...EB need to sort out their logistics of operation.

Sony were doing a big promotion (surprise there then) at a lot of football grounds today. Had a go at Selhurst Park this afternoon. As the owner of a PS1 the PS2 was bloody impressive. I wasn't going to buy another console, but I could be persuaded now...

It has even scratched TWO of my discs, when the machine was stood on its end (which it is supposed to be able to do!!!)

Shaun, if you were any more down on PS2, I'd think you were working for Sega!!!

You may not like PS2, but it has pros and cons like all the consoles. Price is obviously a factor and if that's all it is, wait 2 years and it'll be sensibly priced and good value for money.
If you just don't like the machine/games (ps1's first games were sh!te too), don't f##king buy one and stop slagging 'em off unless it's constructive (like, the CD rattles rather than it's sh!te, it's pants, mom bring me some more milk!)
if you're going to start a well what've you got and what'd you know then, I love playing games and as such have a BBC micro, Gamegear, gameboy (mk1 and 2), nes, snes, megadrive, 2 ps1s, n64, DC and a PC (1ghz with a hercules 64mb ultra thingie in it)
I'm probably gonna get flamed for this or win a muppet award, but still...
ps. I have no idea what a PS2 is like, but I do love my DC and wanted to buy 355 and msr but coz the ps2 was coming out, I have to wait a month to get them as well. tsk tsk.

Have you been reading the press reports since the consoles release in Japan? Have you been reading the software houses comments, since the games development has began? If you had, you would realise, it dont make nice reading!!!!!
Sony have produced an overpriced, over hyped, ill supported (software wise) games console...FACT!
The reason I SAY it is bad, is because of these above reasons. The technology is without doubt the best on the market, but.....so was the 3DO, Jaguar, Lynx etc etc at the time.....and look what happened to them!
How many MEGA games are out or due out SOON......ermmmm, oh yes GT3....Well that makes all the difference!
As regards to your point on price...you need to do your homework matey! The reason why it is so highly priced NOW & ALWAYS will BE is because of the DVD drive. If a machine is classed as a DVD player, it will attract an additional TAX. This machine WILL ALWAYS be highly priced.....unless the government change there policies!!!!!
I like the games I have got for it, I wouldnt of bought them otherwise!!!!! And to say that the original PS1 games were crap, is pathetic!!!! I remember taking delivery of my JAP Playstation just before christmas (4-5 years ago). I had a copy of Ridge Racer with it, and it was the dogs nuts!!! For the first time I really had an arcade game in my own home!!!!!! That machine WAS groundbreaking......PS2 isnt!
How can I take my PS2 back......I have had it for nearly a year!!??
The PS2 is obviously not a crap console (things that I have said in previous threads are mostly tongue in cheek!! - Of course I WOULD really give my PS2 to the dustmen!!!), but I do think Sony have REALLY OVER-HYPED this console and are living off the back of the original playstations success!!!!

Why do so many people blame sony for marketing thier produts effectivley?
Why is it sonys fault that Sega and Nintendo had a few bad years, not Sega and Nintendos fault for running a bad business.
I will keep playing Driver 2 and wait untill the PS2 has proven to be worth it. The DC seems to be getting better and better, MSR looks ratehr tasty.....

Even if the product isn't as hot as we all expected (what did we expect other than PSX1 in higher res?) we can't really blame Sony for making everyone in the world want one and want to give them all our money.
I think I'll just keep on feeding the ever-expanding moneypit I call a PC, and stay away from slagging off £300 consoles that seem to do a good job of what they're out there for.
