My friend's son back from overseas accidentally filled up his Landrover Discovery diesel model with petrol and the car ground to a halt after a short distance and had to be towed. What sort of damage is he looking at, as it is unlikely insurance will cover? That's a X'mas holiday trip shot!

Thanks for the prompt replies, guys. Hope it will be just a drain the fuel tank and change fuel filter job if he is lucky. Why can't manufacturers make filler necks that can only accomodate their particular fuel type pump nozzle, like they did with cat equiped cars that can only take unleaded, then no problem will arise. Just out of interest, will the reverse (i.e. diesel in a petrol car) be more painful?

Paul, will the effect of diesel in petrol engine be like that of hydraulic lock when water gets into the engine? Diesel being less inflammable may not ignite properly and remain in the cylinder as liquid. So conversely, petrol in a diesel engine will lead to pre-ignition before the end of the compression stroke, knocking/deting may knacker the piston.
