I heard that the UK and US spec PS2s will have hardware DVD in them and hence be much better at playing DVDs than the software DVD equipped Japanese counterpart. Have a look at

In singapore they had 3 kinds of Ps2's !
One without DVD option , one with DVD , and the Japanese version to play Japanese games .
DVD picture quality is nice and crisp same as any dedicated dvd palyer IMHO , and no problmes using UK dvd's .
AWD , havn't heard of any 'after market' chips to play all region DVD's .

AWD , sorry never tried US DVD's or games .
Somehow I doubt it would work .
After much hagling with the shop keeper (also bought a walkman from him) I got my PS2 for about 250 GB squids.
How much are they going to sell them over here for then ?
I could have bought a whole bunch of these things and flogged them on the BBS !! Damn .

Hi all
This is exactly what i got from sony edited slightly just incase
Thank you for placing a pre-order with *******for your PlayStation 2.
Your details have been registered in the official PlayStation 2 pre-order
queue and a PlayStation 2 has been reserved for you. Due to the popularity
and demand for PlayStation 2, we are unable to confirm specific delivery
dates at the moment but please bear with us. You can rest assured that a
PlayStation 2 has been reserved for you. Your place in the queue is secure,
so there is no need to pre-order a PlayStation 2 from anywhere else.
The official PlayStation 2 pre-order process has been introduced to ensure
that all customers are treated fairly. A significant sum of money has been
invested in the development and production plants for PlayStation 2 and at
present, worldwide demand is outstripping the number of machines available.
Whilst this is a situation Sony Computer Entertainment would rather avoid,
the official pre-order process guarantees you a position in the queue and
you can be confident that you will receive your PlayStation 2 as soon as
possible.
If you have any enquiries regarding your pre-order, please contact the
retailer where you placed your pre-order or for more details of the
pre-order process, take a look at

Jap and UK regions are the same region 2 so quite rightly there should be no problems, if i manage to find the how to mod for ps2 i'll email it to you, american DVD's are sometimes better sometimes worse its a major case of checking details before you buy, good bit though is that there out so much earlier than UK sometimes even before uk cinema release.

I've had that too - no exact date. Apparently the US ones have been delayed a bit because of some trouble sourcing components... keeping fingers crossed for Nov 24th...

What next? Car manufacturers putting people on waiting lists because they can't satisfy demand?
Jeeez, it's the most popular and long-awaited console in the history of gaming, did you ever seriously think that Sony would be able to satisfy such huge global demand?

Well I ordered from dixons on 7th Sep, and was told I will get order conf from Sony in 14 days.
Still nothing over a month later, anyone else ordered from Dixons and got the confirmation letter?
Also the URL back in this thread doesn't seem to work for me either

I ordered from Gamestation in Wembley.
Along with five friends. And I got my confirmation ten days after they did!
The Nintendo Cube will be more powerful than Sony's Playstation.
In much the same way that the N64 was superior to the original Playstation.
Unfortunately, the N64 is, and always will be, a family entertainment machine.
That means cartoon characters with cutesy graphics.
Ok, you have Turok and Turok 2 and Goldeneye but no decent beat me up. No decent racing game.
Playstation has many more levels of "entertainment" to choose from.
From toddler through to adult gamer. Cool.

Nintendo & Sega run the risk of being pushed completely out of the console market by Sony. The N64 might have been superior to the Playstation, but that's irrelevant when you're late to market and you have no games. Missing the full-motion video boat by sticking with cartridges didn't help much either.
Even now, there are hardly any N64 games, never mind decent ones.
Unlike Nintendo, Sega realised that releasing endless numbers of cutesy Japanese games wouldn't work in Europe & the US, but they still marketed the Saturn as a child's toy. It was Sony who broke the mould, pushing the whole package as an adult entertainment system.
Unless the Cube offers a real quantum leap over the PS2 (and not just "slightly sharper or a bit faster"), then it will go the same way as the N64.
Assuming the PS2 is the massive success that it should be, the only way Nintendo & Sega will survive is by making their machines PlayStation compatible, or waiting for Sony to screw up. Sony's biggest enemy in all this is itself.

I bought a magazine called PSi-2.
Usual previews and reviews of PS2 games BUT
they actually seemed to think Dreamcast beat the PS2 graphically regarding use of the engine.
They are of the opinion that although Tekken Tag is a very good game, 3D movement was limited and you always felt you were fighting within a small circle.
Well, I've played all the Tekkens and I've played Ready2Rumble.
I know which one keeps me coming back for more ...
