I am selling my current 5.1 setup ( here to keep the Mrs happy, and I am looking for a set of small what they call 'lifestyle' speakers.

Several people have recommended Bose, but Im not so sure if they will be OK for music, and I dont think you can upgrade them to 6.1 etc.

I have considered the flat panel missions, FS2 and the new FS1 but Im told they will be poor compared to my current setup.

Current favourite is the KEF KHT2005 'Eggs' as they get great reviews and were What HiFi product of the year in their category.

Anyone got/heard the KEFs, or got any other recommendations?

I need to get myself down the hifi shop soon for a listen.

I have got the Kef system

Connected to a Yamaha A5 Amo. Excellent, heartiily reccomended.

Gut rippling sub (large living room) and some midrange, which is a bloody miracle from a sub/sat system!!!

Get GOOD cable though.

PS Hated the Missions. No midrange and the bass farted on the matrix!

I did a similar exercise last year. I did listening tests with Bose cubes and Kef eggs, but a package sold in Richer Sounds for £500 made by Mordaunt Short impressed me the most with the power, clarity and general response, so that's the one I bought. Check out premiere

I recently purchased the KEF KHT3005 set in Dark Nickel (MarkWRX, see offlist mail for more details) and I am extremely impressed with them. I bought a Denon 3802 amp at the same time.

The 3005, apart from being as rare has hen's teeth (only 1000 worldwide) is the same as the 2005 (which has the PSW2000 sub, 250w, 8" cone) but comes with the PSW3000 sub (300w, 10" cone).

You can buy the larger sub seperately if you so desire, IIRC the price is £699.

I've got a set of Bose AM15's.

The sound absolutely fantastic, especially for the size of them, but are not cheap - I paid around £1k and that was 2 1/2 years ago.

There's no upgrade path - you can't go 6.1 with these unless they've brought out a 6.1 package. The reason is that the sub is used for more than just the extreme bass, it also provides some fill in frequencies for the other speakers. So all 6 sets of speaker cable run from the amp to the sub then from the sub out to the individual speakers.

The result is excellent though with a smooth sound across the entire frequency range. I've got a mate with some other lifestyle speakers (can't remeber which) and they're nowhere near as smooth - you can easily hear when the sub kicks in and I'm no audiophile......

NO Don't buy a BOSE system read some of the reviews on the net about bose systems.

We spent weeks looking for the best system we could find and we listened to shed loads of kit in the end we opted for a full size system but we could have gone for midi speakers but no way were we going down the Bose route as most of the wright ups say "how can you get a good sound out of a small speaker" Try a mid size speaker system.

IGNORE all the advice, and buy what sounds best to YOUR ears.

I had a similiar issue and had various speaker systems on loan/trial in my house.

I went the Bose route.

Agree with Huxley,i'm not a fan of Bose either.

I also spent ages looking and in the end it came down to either the Keff Eggs or the Energy take 5's.I went for the Energys.IMO they are better for music and are also a bit cheaper(£599).They are also very small,see pics,although they do look rather plain.



Also have a Denon 2802 and Sony DVP900.
(plus a crap carpet and tv stand)

i've heard the bose lifestlye system before, can't remember which series though.

my god, tiny speakers and the sound was awesome "and I'm no audiophile......"

think the top sets go for a few grand

Bose...easy to be impressed..but as for sound quality..NEVER.The only thing they make well is the kitchen type CD/radio,Now thats cool.

I've got the Energy Take 5.2 system which is a little more expensive than the Take 5 system. They are IMHO a very good little speaker system if setup and configured properly. With the sub sats systems connected to the AMP you need to make sure that the AMP passes the correct frequencies to the sub and the sat so that you get a nice sound. You also need to arrange the speakers in the correct locations.

I have a Yamaha AX620 which is probably going to be replaced with something that supports the new 6.1 formats.

Cheers for all the replies.

Sold the missions today (Hope you enjoy them Simon ) and then managed to get KEF Eggs from my local John Lewis store this afternoon on a price match.

Got them down from £799 to £625, well chuffed

Just set them up and they sound pretty good, if different to the missions. Need a bit more playing with I think.
