About 13 years ago I thought about turning pro. You don't get a salary as such, it just depends on your sponsors and how many events you win. Not too sure what the prize money is like these days but it is not a glamorous lifestyle.

Stick to modelling cos you might break a nail

Women's windsurfing still has a lot of catching up to do with men's in terms of skill level so only the top women sailors get decent money whilst a lot of the lesser ranked males get better money simply from sponsorship deals. Unless of course they can make a brand name which is extremely hard in such a low spectator sport.

If ur any good then the first step is to move out of this country.

BTW what style do u do? free, wave, slalom, course????

Nik Baker has got where is through excelling at indoor (wasnt he world champion a few times???).

I started off course racing. Used to live abroad in Cyprus which had great winds at the time. Won the '93 all island comp at 15 (in the mens 6.0 event) but then got bored and got into wave sailing. Had to move back to this country and had to give up as on students finances I couldnt afford the extorianite kits prices in this country and didnt have van to carry it all around in.

Still have my first wave board a 255 Bic Alto - tiny little thing.

I used to sail for Tushingham sails, Marlin wet suits and Sunshine (booms, masts, clothing). The deal was that they gave me about £10k of kit a year which I sold at the end of the year, raising about £6k. It was enough to pay for doing the events, but not a living. To earn a living, you really need to be doing the World Cup and doing it well.

Sponsors at all levels expect you to get good press coverage and obviously results.

Weapon69 give my regards to Nic. Do you also know Gazza Mason and the Shoreham crowd? Coincidentally, Jamie Hawkins is a Scooby owner and is often in here. Saw him on Friday.

Brit Dunkerbeck used to earn a good living from it, but brother Bjorn was on serious money in his day.

Bjorn never had the same sponsorship appeal as Robby though - that man is a legend - not only in windsurfing. Who else do you know who would drive a custom made porsche with roof racks for his boards???

I think a good pro can earn about £100 a time.

They do down Kings Cross, anyway.
