"Iraqis vote today on re-electing President saddam Hussein, demonstating support for their leader as the UN Security Council considers military action to force him to disarm, the Associated Press said.

Hussein, who has ruled Iraq since 1979, is the only name on the ballot paper, AP said. Iraqis will vote yes or no to re-electing him for another seven year term. Hussein received 99.96 percent of the vote in a 1995 referendum on extending his presidency.

The referendum "will be a message to the entire world, confirming the Iraqi people's trust and loyalty to President saddam Hussein and their victory on enemies' failed schemes" the official Iraq News Agency said.

Heard this on the radio this morning... there is one candidate, Sadam, and you can either vote yes or no. Lat time 7 years ago 99.96% voted yes.

Voters have been told that to vote once is not enough and they should vote yes, yes, yes.

What a great democracy.

Cool

Reports in the paper that people were pricking their fingers so that they could vote in blood. Crazy!!!

The only time I'd consider voting in blood was if the red stuff came out of the politician concerned.

Not sure. Couldn't find anything concrete in a brief websearch. However, there's a story here about how women don't have the vote in Kuwait, so I suspect that being a harsher regime which isn't westernised, the same will be true for Iraq.

Mind you, it wouldn't matter if they could vote, would it, since the men don't really have a free choice anyway!

Hey, don't get cross. The women are probably happier doing the ironing and cooking anyway. Everybody knows that voting's too complicated for 'the fairer sex'.

update:

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein won 100 percent of the vote in a referendum on giving him a new seven-year mandate, Agence France-Presse said, citing Ezzat Ibrahim, the head of the supervising committee."

Hmmmmm indeed.......

Re: Women's lib, sometimes I agree it was a bad thing. Due to all the changes in recent years women have an equal opportunity in the workplace. Same pay for the same job - only fair eh? Even YOU MarkO cannot say that is unfair?

Now, not only do we have to go out to work, but we have to organise the kids, make sure the house is tidy, cook the dinner, do the washing up, decorate the house, do the washing and ironing.................... The only thing us being liberated has done is make our men lazier and us more stressed.

Still, wouldn't want to go back to the old days eh?

Heh heh. Equal pay for women would be fair, but only if women could do the job as well as men.
Now, not only do we have to go out to work, but we have to organise the kids, make sure the house is tidy, cook the dinner, do the washing up, decorate the house, do the washing and ironing....................
Pffff. Not a single job in that list that I've not done recently.
The only thing us being liberated has done is make our men lazier and us more stressed.
Men's actual laziness hasn't increased - we just have more opportunities to exhibit it.

Is it true that their name and address is on the voting slip? So if you vote NO they know where you live!

I think that anyone residing in Iraq can vote if they have a moustache, which accounts for most of the women :P

And the craziest statement..?

Iraqui officials declared that there had been a 100% turnout.

Yeah, right, so they tracked down every Iraqi on holiday, went up to them on the beach and said "sign here please".

Fekkin unbelieveable. Any Iraqis on here to give us a more "balanced" overview of this process...?

I think that only those who had sworn utter compliance to Saddam were able to vote.

Aha. Oh well then, that makes it all fair and proper, natch.

The UK might have it's minus points, but generally i'm mighty glad i don't live in an awful lot of other countries around the world.

Iraq still more democratic than Jersey

At least if I lived in Iraq I would have the chance to vote for Saddam.

We had "elections" in Jersey today but th esystem here is beyond belief. I was born here and lived here all my life, pay taxes and have lived at the same house for the last 11 years.

The system over here is that you must re-register every year to be on the electoral roll. Elections are held every 6 years so I discovered that over the last 11 years I have been on the list in all but two years. Guess which two years? Yes, the ones in which the elections are held. Iqueried this with the reurning officer this morning but he explained that I'm on the list for next year and last year but they got my form a day late for this year so I can't vote. This is despite the fact that my wife toook the form and personally handed it in on the due date!

Almost a waste of time voting over here anyway, as the system is set to prevent any real change.

Jersey, only slightly less democratic than Iraq
