Am just reading "Everything is negotiable" by Gavin Kennedy and was reading a true story of a Vietnemese guy who haggles over everday items like tins of soup etc,in his local Wallmart.
Now,thats going a bit far but anyone else love to haggle.

I always challenge the price of anything over £150.

I ask for a discount most places I shop, except the supermarket and fast food.

You don't ask you don't get.

Definitely mate! For higher value stuff it's always worth giving it a go, especially if the salesman is chasing a bonus!

Yep, has to be done.

Walking into a high-street retailer is always fun, especially when the spotty herbert YTS kid tells you "that's the price, take it or leave it" and is astonished when his colleagues jump in to correct him

You don't ask you don't get !, why pay advertised price for anything that's my moto, I don't go to extremes like haggling on food and newspapers etc, but as I understand it you can, and depending on the sales assistant get upto 10% off those items !
Always in the back of my mind is the huge markup on 99% of all goods.
Best bargain this year has been 9% off brochure price of holiday to Florida, saved about £500..

"Hello, yes I am interested in this, can we negotiate a price"

"Yes, this is just what I am looking for, the only thing missing is a discount"

"Hmm, and what sort of deal can you do me on that?"

"If you can do something with the price you have a deal"

If they won't move on the price, then ask what they can throw in for free, Halfords are like this, very inflexible on cycle prices, but a good chance of getting accessories like a D-lock.

Comet, dixons etc used to give 10% quite easily, less so now as the prices are hotter anyway.

The golden rule is, be prepared to walk away. You can always go back if a better deal is not to be had.

Always haggle...and always carry cash

Estate agents are the best..."well, if you've got a queue of people who want my house, and you reckon it'll sell well, how about a flat fee of £1,000 ???" - he agreed to it, and saved us a packet.

Also, remember that interest free often costs, so avoid and pay in full and you should see some discount.

Yoza, how come selling your Seamaster - thought you'd only just bought it ?

I always try it
even tried for my wedding reception at portmeirion but the quite reasonable reply was something "like we can guarantee to fill our rooms for full price at that time of year wether you book or not"
Still i had to ask. :

/rant on

there is no way you will get anything off high street white goods, (unless it's damaged, then you get a whole 10% if your lucky) clothes etc in the UK unless it's a designer shop or something.
Everything is goverened by the big retailers/manufacturers in this country that's why it's **** & in a bad state of affairs.
We are the worst for almost eveything in Europe inc:
wages
working hours
white goods
housing
cars (only recently coming down through car supermarkets)
clothes
service of any kind

/rant off

go on then, name me a few things that we are better/cheaper at...oopps highjacking the thread a bit there

Shunty...not strictly true. I try and wait until I want a few items, then try and get some bits thrown in for free - ie, recently bought new TV, Video, and DVD at the same time, got PS2 game, 2 x DVDs, and pack of blank videos thrown in. It might not be much, but it's always nice to get something for nothing

smaller independant shops are always good for haggling as usually you can speak to someone who has his wallet directly related to the proffits!

Off to buy a digi camera this PM, will be in a small local shop, and will be haggling indeed!
