Does anyone live away in the week and "go home" at weekends?

Hi All,
I totally cant decide what to do with my living arrangements. The gist of it is as follows:
Work in Reading
Live in Winchester(80 mile round trip every day)but live with folks and need to get out majorly.
However 95% of my friends live in Essex, close to M25 and thats where I really wanna be. However moving jobs aint an option. So I wondered about living in a mates flat in Essex at weekends and then living at my parents in the week, splitting rent as seen fit.(btw moving jobs not an option at the mo)
This means more driving and petrol costs, but probably a happier me.
Is this a stuppid idea, or do others do such things????

I'm in a somewhat similar situation.
I work shifts in West London, but I'm originally from West Wales. Mates in London, Southampton, Bristol, Cardiff, Swansea, parents still in West Wales. So I used to end up doing the full length of the M4 or M3 twice every 4 days or so.
It was getting 'kin expensive!!
Mortgage, petrol, and then what you spend going out on the p!ss.
I did two things, joined a voluntary organisation (best thing i ever did!) and made a few more good mates in London so I'm not so desperate to get the f*** outta here, and bought an old banger diesel to thrash up and down the motorway, 40+mpg no matter how I drive it, and not really fast enough to get banned
(can still manage 260 miles in 3 hours 7 minutes for £20 though!)

The worst road sign in the world is "London 151" when you've already been driving for over an hour in the rain at 11:00pm!

I'm going to be doing this malarky soon. We're moving to Scotland, but for a few months (whilst I find something decent up there) I will be flying down on Monday, working/staying in London during the week (anyone got a bed/flat/floor they want to rent? ) and flying home on Friday.
It's going to be tough, but it makes sense for me. I don't think I'll be wanting to do it long-term, though.
