You might wanna try posting this over on PigeonWatch, you'll probably have more luck there (although there is the odd farmer on here).

Don't be daft guys, some people enjoy shooting vermin, that's just the way it is. I take it you all enjoy your steaks and chicken roast dinners? Unless you're all vegan's? Sigh.

I'm not sure that's the argument I'd use. It might be more family friendly to say that some people enjoy the challenge/sport of shooting. The notion of Flopsy bunny/Basil Brush/Bamby being a pest that needs controlling tends to upset people.

Ridiculous. We've just had a cull of rabbits on our little patch of land. They're a pain in the backside.

I enjoy shooting because its a sport i grew up with along with many others and lots of people have different views on the matter. Lots of rabbits have mixi that can spead and kill other live stock and also cause farmers problems with crops and feeding etc

How do you approach land owners/farmers??

Do you have public liability insurance for your gun??

I shoot as well, but am lucky enough to be surrounded by farms. Can spin 360 any field I can see, pretty much I have permission for :-)

Keeping duck and chickens I like to keep rats under control, but also magpies which target my eggs.
Will usual go round the fields 3/4 times a year plinking off any rabbits with mixi that I spot and bag em up.

Whilst on the subject of vermin, are there any birds of prey that'll keep crows away? We're plagued with a few huge flocks and although our dogs manage to kill the occasional crow they breed at an exponential rate and I'm wondering about alternatives

Some people say owl decoys work..

Nothing like a 12 guage blasting into the air a few times.. They soon learn to stay away.

Crows,Ravens,Rooks, jackdaws, magpies are all of the corvid family and are classed as a pest.
Where as pigeons, such as the feral, wood and another which I can't remember are classed as pest.
But collared doves/pigeon and a couple of other cannot. Neither can any type of gull.
Even though the blacking full wrecks havoc on growing crops.

Not strictly true (apologies if this is a case of teaching yo suck eggs), magpies are covered in England under the General Licence.

"General licences are issued by government agencies to provide a legal basis for people to carry out a range of activities relating to wildlife. By definition you do not need to apply for general licences but you are required by law to abide by their terms and conditions."
From the basc uk website.

In other words, every year a new licence is made up tell you what is classed as a pest and how you allowed to control it.

I can lend you some eggs if your still learning to suckle.....

Larsen trap can be good for small numbers for a specific problem, ie egg snatching.
But unless you have land to move them round, they wise up to the traps pretty quick.

So fundamentally, are they or are they not licenced?

They are on a licence, but you don't have to apply for it or be assessed or pay any money.
Just follow the guidelines set out in the said "licence".

It's guidelines on how and what you can control, and using what methods.

For example.
Like I said black wing gulls are protected, but if next year the governing body decide that the gull is a pest, then it would be added to said "licence".
And will give guidelines on control.
There's nothing to say that the year after they maybe classed as protected again.

That is why you should always check the legal grounds on the quarry you are targeting.

Driving licence, alcohol licence, fishing licence, firearms gun licence etc etc... You have to apply for all of those, with a cost as well

This licence is more of a set of standards to abide by.

If your want to look into it abit more, the BASC (British Association Of Shooting & Conservation) website will have all of the information you need.

Nothing like getting shot by a farmer or another shooter out on the land not knowing your there.

It's just been lambing season and farmers don't take to kindly to random people wandering their fields with big lamps and guns scaring pregnant sheep causing costly abortions or still births.
Poachers also generally have no respect for the land they are on, leave gates open, damage crops and scare livestock.
Don't have anytime for poachers. Sorry.

A farmer I know, rolled a poachers car on its roof with his tractor for him to come back too.
Don't **** off farmers, they have big macinary/ muck spreader and slurry pits.

The hunting season is over when lambing season starts dummy. Good luck in your search for permission in the uk 99 percent of the land is reserved for clubs and game shoots very profitable for the farmer you want to do some hunting real hunting fall in with the poachers no other way come back in 6 months time to me won't say I told u so. I started out with the noblest of ideas on um impossible get permission fell in with a good few local lads new the countryside we'll never left a gate open or broke a fence common misconception about poachers confusing is with pikeys
