Default buying a private plate

you see it on a reg web site.. make an offer or enquiry .. wait till they get back to you to say..

Oh, that one we've had on the books a while and I can't get hold of the seller... or they've sold it.. or it's now gone.

Is it just a case of they list plates... and then find the owner if they get an enquiry.

I asked 2 dealers to sell mine, they both valued it at around £500 (i expected maybe £200), 1 put it on their site at £650 and the other £800?
Almost 2 years later it hadn't sold so i took it off sale and i'll put it on my next car

I rang DVLA up today about a FIL plate, told her what I was after, but she had nothing.. then said oh, I have FIL 79
I said.. how much is that??
She said, Well I can register your interest in it and IF it comes for sale we'll let you know, but there is no time scale when or if it may be sold!!!

So does that mean the reg is owned by someone but not on a car or for sale ?

Does it have to be FIL ? Have you any other preferences?

you should register for the Dvla Auctions and see what comes up.

past auctions for FIL

well an update, the plate i'd fancy a company who was 'selling' it have rang yesterday to say they can't get hold of the owner..... (another company who have it listed can't get hold of the either!)

But the company that rang me have two more plates to offer me.. both available, she said!!
but they haven't come back to me yet to say they've got hold of one of those owners either!!

Phil

You can effectively register interest and the DVLA will stick it in one of their auctions. We did this as we found out that the perfect plate for my wife's business wasn't in circulation but wasn't for sale.

Couple of months later we got an email saying it was in the auction. We bid and got it for £100.

Edit - just seen you got one.

Yeah, the DVLA woman said that but all she came up with was the FIL 79, and said registering doesn't mean it will or would ever come up for sale. I couldn't wait that long lol
plus two numbers seem to fetch daft money.
http://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov....true&x=44&y=18

SOLD at £1100 + 20% vat and auction fees, so can come expensive.

I've picked up this, should be able to fit on the car next week.
Got the plates sorted now though.. lol
Had to cut them down to a better size though

Tnx, all sorted now but would be interested to see what FIL plates come up

I think FIL was an Enniskillen area plate, looking on Wiki?

Enniskillen DVA licensing office: (in original issuing sequence) IL IG

IL 1 to IL 9999 (Jan 1904 – Feb 1958).
51 IL to 9999 IL (Feb 1958 – Aug 1966).
AIL 1 to YIL 999814, 15, 16 (Aug 1966 – Dec 2004).
AIG 1001 to YIG 999817 (Dec 2004 – current).
The current sequence AIG 1001 to YIG 9998 began in December 2004. The current issue (as of March 2016) is RIG.
When this is exhausted, it is likely the series will reverse, beginning with 1001 AIL to 9998 YIL.
14 Authority transferred from Fermanagh County Council to Enniskillen LVLO/VRO from 1 January 1974; the first registration following the transfer was in the late AIL series.
15 EIL ended at 2423 due to computerisation in October 1986, followed by FIL 101.
16 KIL was deemed inappropriate and will never be issued.
17 CIG, NIG and PIG were deemed inappropriate and will never be issued.

Just been reading the info about the plates from Fermanagh there. I live in N.I. and have a keen interest in plates in general. A friend of mine has EIL on her car and I'm almost sure it's a higher number than they've said it stopped at. Must find out! My grandfather had JXI 750 on his old Peugeot 205 and we had FIB 6666 many moons ago on an old Volvo. Our neighbour had BAZ 8008 on his Volvo (I think). I recently picked up VKZ 353 on a Corsa I bought for £500!

I rang almost every week for 6 months and registered a new interest every time I rang Eventually my calls triggered enough interest for them to auction it and I won it

I have never felt the need for a private plate. All you need is the appropriate deed poll forms each time you change your car and it's sorted.

Currently, I'm Mr GH07YJK, but my friends just call me GH.

(With apologies to Viz from many years ago.)

It's the nearest I could get, I did see FIL 963, but no one seemed to be able to get hold of the owner, so you take it it's either gone or someone doesn't want to sell it.

I'm happy with 378 though, it looks good on a plate. Just now waiting to get the go ahead to fit the plate.. fingers crossed for the weekend.

No one will know I've a 14yr old car it's on.. and its only got 40k miles on it

Well really it's only one number off (albiet backwards).
Is that a pic of the plate thats on it ? Would that not be worth selling on?
