Default High Performance Police cars

Cops are soon to be seen in your areas in one of them :

I bet you all want to become police officers now.

The best they've done this end is an odd Audi Quattro among shoddy Fords, so far. I don't think they'll do any better than that this end, but who knows. Their aims and objectives are being achieved by their GoSafe scamera vans here, anyway. I think it's the Essex cops that like to pose in flashy blues-n-twos, don't they?

My neighbour is Traf-Pol on the M5. They all cruise around in unmarked BMW 335ds. Quite capable to 150+Mph. They don't really need anything quicker as they just use bikes or send up a chopper for anyone doing daft speeds.

Glad to see the southern forces are doing quite well.

We don't have enough 1.4 Astras on our shifts, so we are hiring 1.3 unmarked Corsas to back fill - not easy to respond in. And our nearest chopper is about 200 miles away!! And never lifts when you ask it.

That's the thing, the police don't really need a faster car than the people they're chasing. Driver training, and flashing Blue lights give them the advantage. Plus, it's always easier to chase, than be chased.

Think the best Police cars back in the day were marked & unmarked Sierra Saphire & Escort Cosworth's. Not much outran them back in the day.

I'm guessing the Renault Twizy must be reserved for catching wanted OAPs who make a run for it on their disability scooters. We get a lot of those around here

Anyone remember seeing this on Police, Camera, Action in 1997? I thought it was amazing at the time. You'd probably struggle to do it in 3.5 hours now.

I think the cars are Rover SD1's

I would think the Twizzy is adequate for cruising around the streets watching out for scumbagery, it doesn't need to be fast for that

They had a grey r32 here in Devon on m5 a couple of years ago. I was on my way home on the a 361 when an r32 came past and pulled in front of me and slowed up. As if waiting for me to give it some, but I had seen it on the slip road on jct 28 a week earlier when he had pulled some one over. I recognised the number plate.

How little traffic on the motorway? Wish it was like that now.

They wouldn't stand a chance doing that now

Each force has it's own budget and therefore it's own choice of cars. So lots of Golf R32s/GTis on the M4/40. Loads of Focus ST's on the M1 around Leicestershire. 335ds on the M5 etc.

Essex used to have lots of Evo's as ANPR cars - but I think that was more of a visual deterrent, as they were fragile and expensive to run/service.

It's a bit of a myth that Police cars are souped-up - sure they have uprated pads but nothing more performance wise. They are a huge fleet operator, so the reliability, service schedule and parts cost is of huge importance. So they aren't going to operate anything custom of without huge manufacturer/dealer support.

There are a lot of Royal Close Protection vehicles around where I live, and they all drive Mitsubishi Oultanders for example.

Saw this in a car mag a while back, and yes, that is an Aston 177 in the middle!

Have also been nicked by an unmarked Golf R32, but that was a while ago now as the points are no longer valid.
