Default ebay, WTF?

Had an email from them, supposedly someone unauthorised trying to use my account, so please will I click this link and reset everything.

Nope.

So I phone them this morning, after going through a right rigmarole to get a number.

The usual Phillipino voice, and yes, someone MIGHT have tried to get access so I should change all my passwords etc.

Now that I do NOT want to do, since I then forget the password and end up changing it again and again and again

She then rattles on about needing to change it because someone could get in via my email account.

I asked how, since they would need a password, and she had no reply. I am now awaiting a supervisor ringing me back...I hope they aren't Phillipino too.

If it turn out they are so insecure that someone can get into my account by knowing my email address, they are history.

could it have been a 'spoofing/scamming' email (not from ebay at all..)?

I remember when I used to buy BB Guns that looked just like real guns from the pound shop in the Ridings shopping centre and sell them for £25 each on ebay, happy days until security stopped the shop selling them due to kids shooting each other in the middle of the shopping centre.

I was inquiring about buying them at cost from the local firm that made them and making big money but ebay guidelines changed shortly after.

Get a password manager, simple. It will or should choose your passwords for you and fill in the password box when you need it to. I don't know any of my passwords. Pretty much all of them work across all devices, I use 1Password and can't fault it.

The first email you received was probably a scam, likely it didn't work as it had already been taken down. Just using your email address they get you to put in your current password and a fake new password, once they have that they can go to town hoping you don't notice or just take your whole account and start selling stuff they don't have.

So they rang me back. Apparently I HAVE to reset my password since they have reset it for me????? After dubious activity last night.

So I go onto my account, and it's NOT been reset at all.

WTF is going on? They don't know, and I certainly don't.

This supervisor woman assures me that someone tried to access my account by requesting a new password sent to my email account...to which they must ALSO have a password??? So I should change that too????

And that if I change my ebay password, somehow, this can't happen again???
I've never heard such bullsh!t.

I've told her to go away, investigate and come back when she can convince me, or I'll just close the account.

Oh...and another Phillipino.

mate, change the password on your account and your email and stop being a turd about it.

Worst case it's a waste of time, best it saves you having to moan to us about being riped off

Being a turd about it?

What a w@nker you are talking to someone like that. You give, you get.

Two points, w@nker:

1. How will changing my password stop whatever has happened happening again? They cannot answer that, and I doubt you can either.

2. Why should I change my password on their say so, then almost certainly have to change it again next time etc, and all the while I have yet another password to remember?

eBay have become paranoid since that hack nearly 2 years ago

You should try working for them and all the changes/rigmarole that their infosec team insist on...

close the account over a change password request for your own security? WOW.
If they notified you someone tried to access your account by sending a password reminder i wouldn't worry.

For instance, i could go on ebay right now, click forgot password, enter your email and poof, nothing happens because i never had your password to begin with, if they did they wouldn't need it sent in an email.

But on a serious note, having the same password and/or email for every online account you have is a very sure way of one day getting royally and digitally ****ed in the a$$. If you get caught out with a virus or phising scam and go onto just one thing you need to login, as simple as SN. they all of a sudden have access to all your accounts as its the same info.

Your online security is in the stone age my friend. Just my 2 cents.

These poor minimum wage agents trying to help you protect your details and you just want to argue for the sake of it.

1. It won't stop it, but it may save you losing out this time.

2. For the sake of security and your personal information being sold a thousand times over, I'd say it was worth remembering. FFS just add a number or change a letter.

Jeff

Stop being such a drama queen. Next time someone who operates a site that you use under their rules asks you to do something as simple as change a password try these simple steps:

1) Change the password

2) Enjoy the fact that you can continue to use the site, securely.

3) Decide not to f*cking moan and rant about it on other sites (apologies LSherratt, however sometimes there is a good reason to swear)

Yes, yes, I see the other pov, but I reiterate:

1. WHY do I need to change my password? No unauthorised use has been made and none CAN be made without my password, or that of my email account linked to the ebay account.

2. If I do change it, what, then, is to stop someone supposedly doing what THEY say has been done and me having to change it again? ad infinitum?

Update: they have done something to my account that meant I HAD to ask for a password change to get back in.

They did NOT ring me back when they said they would.

There has been NO unauthorised activity.

WTF is going on?????????

Exactly.

And I've still had no explanation as to WHY I should have changed my password, or what was suppposedly going on...and no evidence that anything WAS going on, just their say-so.

Very suspicious, doesn't make me trust them at all.

Things like this make me laugh....... working in IT - users/customers never want to change their passwords, keep the same password for everything and sometimes make them way too simple........... they are then the first to moan when their accounts get hacked.

Ebay notified you to do something. Don't worry so much about why this, why that, just do what they ask, your account is secure again and move on in life

Well, still no response from them.

Pro's and con's.

Con: I can't remember the new password already.

Pro: nothing.
