Need a new radio
My Dewalt radio just stopped working today so I'm tasked with buying a new one and my dilemma is do I buy a dab one or a normal FM one? Is anyone using a DAB radio on site and if they are what is it like for reception?
Obviously its more money for the DAB one but if they don't get a good signal I'm sure I will be wasting my cash.
I'm probably going Makita this time as the sound quality is far better than my Dewalt and these are my two choice.

DAB - loads of stations
FM - a lot less, and it'll only get worse.
I can't think of any good reason for the FM one, unless you regularly use it in a poor signal area where the FM would hiss and crackle but the DAB will cut out.
I have the Makita one because I have Makita batteries to run it. An 18v LI-ion will run it for a day fairly loud.

For a site radio though, DAB is definitely the way to go.

Re: This alleged switch off: Why doesn't France and Spain use DAB? Or is it a different codec/whatever? I only ask as the DAB in the car doesn't work when driving over there.
Would have thought the UK would be harmonised with Europe, bit like DVB currently is.
Anyhoo; these site radios.....why isn't there one with a built in battery charger? You'd think it'd be common sense to build the charger into the radio so when its running on mains you can charge the power tools. Massive oversight IMO (one less socket in use, one less thing to carry from the van etc.)

"In Europe (and Australia, and a few other places) we’ve plumped for the DAB family (DAB, DAB+, DMB-A). Thanks to WorldDMB, new radios that you purchase today, as long as they comply with WorldDMB’s “profile 1″, will work in any DAB country."

Not sure if any older radios can be firmware-upgraded to support the other DAB variations, but could be worth checking with the manufacturer.
Edit: Plus the fact that there only seems to be any DAB(+) coverage in France or Spain at all in just a few major cities:

Nothing good enough or loud enough and it will kill my phone battery. You need something loud as if they start up a stihl saw in your house you want to be able to hear the tunes and if someone starts in your house and puts their radio on a different station you need it loud enough to drown theirs out
Bought the Makita DAB and my 12vlt battery lasted all day at just over 20 on the volume. The signal did break up a little but that's due to no aerial in the box and no time to return to the shop till Friday.

I bought a makita 104 DAB at xmas, I've been disappointed with the reception. when you scroll to search for another station, if you haven't clicked on one in 5 seconds the display goes back to 'volume', I'm still searching FFS
. If you were looking on your phone or laptop and the screen went off even 5 seconds (even if you are scrolling/moving the cursor), you'd end up throwing it at the wall the best radio I have had was a Bosch powerbox, great reception, sound quality and bass. The only issue was it was MASSIVE
