Default Van Insurance

I will be contacting the DVLA about this tomorrow anyway.......but wanted to ask here. Some good opinions on this forum. Slightly older demographic I feel, therefore more chance of someone with first hand experience!

In a moment of naivety, I bought a 2001 Nissan Navara via a friend without doing the insurance check first. Largely because every single car I've owned (3 figures here) has gone straight on without a hitch with a ten min phone call! I have a multi-car policy which helps for my compulsion to be impulsive. Yeah I know. That makes no sense! I can assure you it exists though. So coming to do the usual I am informed that the vehicle cannot be insured as it's been used commercially at some point. I've only had x amount of spare time in the hours that businesses are open to deal with this. Got fed up of being referred to a telephone number from internet-based quotes to then get politely, but repeatedly asked to please hold. What? My breath?!

The car is a King Cab Pick Up. I figured I could "boss" the nemesis that is winter Cotswolds roads in it.....and slow down a bit on the commute. Well I got the latter. I can't drive it yet. Bum sticks!

Anyone had any dealings with "commercial" vehicles. It's not sign-written, has windows, 5 seats, etc. It's a car ffs. The loading bay is unmarked. Will it remain a "commercial" vehicle 'til time inevitably ends its life or can I get it recognised as a car? I'd rather take the time looking at that to get it onto my multi-car policy than spend another hour being patronised by a pre-recorded voiceover on loop........

Thanks in advance peeps.

I've had commercial vehicles for the last 25 years and no issues with insurance.
With Aviva at the moment, but when I had an L200 I always used NFU.

Wrt multi-car policy - I've never been able to add a van to a car policy.

A pick-up has never, and will never, be classed as a car.
All down to pay loads/gvm etc.

Well, saying that.....certain Navaras pop up on Admirals list, hence the confusion. They said it wasn't the car as such, more the way it's been declared/registered. I'm only paraphrasing what they've said tbh. It turns out I knew nothing about this. I've owned a VW Caddy Pick Up prior to this and (wrongly it appears) thought this was just a big version. I'll have to van insure it I guess.

I've always found van insurance a bit of a law unto itself.

Even though I've accrued many years of ncd, the yearly cost never seems to bring this into account.
My premiums for the past 5-6 years has always been around the same price - even though I get a year older, I don't have an accident, I have another years ncd, and the van is older and worth less to replace.

It's cheaper for me to insure an Exige...

I've just bought a Merc Vito as a commercial van for my business and put it through Hastings Direct, funny enough it cost 'half' of what it did to insure last time I owned a Vito and it was my own private vehicle.

Hi,
Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.
Regards,
Dan.

I know this is totally unrelated but I used to get Kwik Fit hassling me every year to get cheaper insurance for my Impreza and I always said it can't be beaten as I had a policy with Keith Michaels.

I was told you were the best they had for modified cars and bearing in mind I told Kwik Fit mine was heavily modified they still pushed me to your group.

I told your rep it was "HEAVILY modified " and he asked if I had an aftermarket ECU which was pretty obvious with my car and that was the end of that call

It may be irrelevant to the OP but these little things stick in my mind when renewing insurance as it can be soo easily voided due to not saying it had X,Y or Z.

I've got a 2007 Traveliner 115d. Insurance was not a lot at all.

I was going to run it alongside a car......but it's fine for every day transport really.

I use mine as a daily as well, it actually drives better than some cars I've owned, it deffo drives better then the Impreza. I'm away to get it mapped this morning actually, the last one I got mapped it made a huge difference.

Got a transit 3way tipper, insurance is always about £100 more than my car but still relatively cheap.
Never had a problem with insurance in 6 years with vans.

Have you pimped it out?

I got a new grill, but really fancy some chrome running boards.

Was looking into a new grill which one did you get? Not pimped it out, but I will be doing things to it like colour coding the bumpers and a half decent set of alloys and maybe a set of running boards like yourself, but nothing OTT.

Genuine merc one from ebay. Was about 65.

Won't go too crazy either, will stop at wheels! It has the 16 inch alloys at the moment.

Good to know. My Admiral policy expires in July, which is why I had to get a separate one for now for this truck. Just bad timing I guess.
