I just purchased mine from Custom Number Plates - Reflective Acrylic Car Registration plates (UK and Ireland) and is a 3/4 sized one. Was getting it to allow more airflow to the FMIC when I put it on, but plans have changed before I could cancel it. Looks ok IMO
Yes its legal, as long as you've got the min gap between edge of numberplate and letters (11mm) Its just a case of getting a full size pl8 and taking either side off it! I've had my shortened 5 digit pl8 on various cars over the past six years and never had any bother of the fuzz or mot inspectors! And my front one is three quarter size like some of the ones above! I say get it done!!!!!

I've had shortened plates on my cars for years without problems. As said earlier, ensure the spacing round the edges is as per the legal requirements and you'll be fine, there is one point thing that an eagle eyed plod might pick up on and that's the BSAU code is usually on the bottom right of the plate and is likely to be cut off on a shortened plate. The way I got round it with my 5 digit plates, was to ask the plate maker to line the digits up from the right and not centre them. Then you only have one cut on the left to make and you keep the makers postcode and the BSAU code, thus keeping you within the letter of the law.
