Talking

I have the pleasure announcing that I proved to myself my car really is quite darn fast

Time of day: night, cloudy
Air pressure: 1014mbar
Temperature: +11 Celcius
Relative Humidity: 85%
Measurement equipment used: G-Tech Pro
Surface: std highway, a bit dusty

Newish ('98?) BMW 540i did 0-100kmh in 6.3secs (with traction control) just like the manufacturer promises, and 0-400m in 14.3s if my memory serves.

97/98 C5 Corvette which had been tuned up a little (better airflow, etc.) did 0-100kmh in about 5.3 to 5.7 secs, and 0-400m in 14s @109mph. It is to be noticed that grip on 2nd gear was lost every time, causing the car go almost sideways ;-) The C5 could do better on a stickier surface and with better tires, we assumed.

What about my MY00 Impreza GT then? No mods, except K&N panel filter and Scoobysport back box. Tyres are Bridgestone S03PP 215/40R17,
40000 miles on the clock. First 0-100kmh (0-62mph) measurement was done on a bit moist tarmac, releasing cluth from 6000rpm, resulting excessive wheelspin. Driver plus one passenger were in, over 1/2 tank of fuel + 20kg of other weight in the trunk. Time: 6.1s - encouraging. Another try from 5000rpm and... 5.8s. I was happy.

Two more tries on dry asphalt with the driver only and 1/2 tank of fuel: 5.6s!... and another... 5.26s! I really felt the latter start being nothing but absolutely perfect, and my friends confessed they had never seen anything disappear so fast from standing still.

I only tried 0-400m once - the time was 13.91s @99mph (0-100kmh in that was 5.6s). Nnnnnice.

If you quote these figures, remember that real-life accuracy of the G-tech Pro is within 0.1s, so forget the 1/100ths.

This message was modified to add a picture and correct some issues - the G-Tech Pro was after all metric version, which I didn't remember.

Thumbs up

Thanks

Clutch is still quite ok. I rather make the wheels spin than my clutch. Stickier surface might cause problems, but we had nice and cold weather...

I just release the clutch as suddenly as I ever can if I know the wheels can spin a little... which they will do the first few 15 feet or something. Surprisingly easy. I imagine I'd have more trouble on a sticky track, whereas those clutch experts probably have a benefit of such surface...

One MY99 standard Impreza GT also wanted to test against my car from 60mph to 120mph. I was WAY faster! I can't imagine just my panel filter and back box giving so much more power - they probably had 95RON fuel in the tank - I always use 98RON.

Great times! Wow that vette rans 14's but trapped at almost 110MPH, that's horsepower!

Can you get 98 RON pump gas in Finland or did you add octane booster?

Slapshot: 95 RON and 98 RON fuel are available on all fuel stations in Finland. The price difference between the qualities is marginal. If a liter of 95 costs FIM 6.50, 98 costs from FIM6.65 to 6.80...

In the 80's before these new clean fuels without heavy metals (rock! ;-) we had 95 RON, 97 RON and 99 RON.

All fuel stations sell the go-juice always with the RON-number name "95E", "98E" etc., which is nice. You always know what you get.
