You don't need 800bhp to produce some decent tyre smoke.
Hello all,
You may have gathered I have now got a scanner, so you are being treated? to some of my archive photos.
This is me about 22 years ago competing in one of the rounds of the BTRDA Autotest Championship.
The car is a Mk1 Escort, 1630cc pushrod Kent engine, stage 1 Piper 3CFG cam or Ford cam, but can't remember the number, home ported 1600 head, Weber 28/36DCD carb, 13 row Serck oil cooler, Mexico exhaust with 4-2-1 manifold, Capri V4 2000E single rail gearbox, with 2.95:1 first gear, Mexico prop with a home made spacer due to single rail boxes being shorter than the geniune Mexico three rail boxes, Mexico front stuts + brakes (uprated with 130lb/in springs, Ferodo DS11 pads, CD8 rear springs, Spax dampers, full FIA cage with detachable diagonal, AVO strut brace, Smiths Tacho, capilery water temp, and oil pressure gauges.
Corbeau GT4 full bucket seat for driver, with Kangol 3 point harness, some unknown make bucket seat for the navigator with Britax 3 point harness.
Home made 1/4" thick aircraft spec dural sump guard.
Running a 4.125:1 diff and a 1:1 fourth gear.
Road wheels and tyres were 5 1/2"J x 13" steels with either Goodyear G800 180/330 x 13 Ultragrip forset rally tyres, or Dunlop SPR3 185/70 x13 road rally tyres, and also tried Pirrelli P Zero forest tyrs on the back once, but they let go on tarmac rather viciously.
For autotesting I had some 4 1/2J x 13 with some Michelins on, hence the serious smoke,
and they dont last very long.
The chap that was on course directly after me was in a Frogeye Sprite, and had been the RAC British Champion for several years. He wsa VERY good, I wasn't.
But from the look on some of the spectators, they seemed to appreciate my less than precise technique. ie foot hard down in forward and reverse gears, very messy.
Car built totally by myself, with help from my friend to replace 3 of the four wings and front panel after a roll.
The back right hand wing is the only original wing left on the car. and the roof had a LOT of filler in it.
We resprayed all the left hand side, front and back, and the front right hand wing, and back right hand wing, but didn't finish of the two right hand doors.
His dad got fed up of seeing my car in their garage being painted with their comprssor and spray gun, fair point I suppose.
Cheers MTR
