Default Dome light and Ignition Ring light constantly on.

Well I did the hard bit and changed the HVAC lighting in my Widetrack for red LEDs, came to do an easy LED swap in the ignition ring and I've broken it!

Basically the red LEDs I bought were the correct fitment, but were a bit too big to fit back into the hole in the ignition ring. I reverted back to the green bulb until I can get some correct smaller red LEDs.

It appears though that I've shorted something out whilst rebuilding my steering column trim - as now, regardless of whether the car doors are open, closed or locked - the dome light (when switch set to the middle notch) and the ignition ring are permanently switched on!

I've opened and closed all doors plenty of times, and unplugged the battery for a minute. Are there any relays which might need "resetting"?

I did some googling and found this thread: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/gr-inter...lp-needed.html which references a "BIU" a few times or "body integrated unit". Apparently it's possible to "burn that out"?

Are these "BIU's" easy to swap out, and do they need to be programmed or specific to my car? If I could find a volunteer who also has a 2005 STI for example could we do a quick swap to test?

I've since dismantled my steering column trim and don't see any broken wires or anything like that - no obvious shorts.

Lesson learned though, unplug battery when playing with electronics - no matter how simple.

Any other suggestions?

Just a side note, the "door open" indicator on my dial cluster is only on when a door is actually open - so definitely not a faulty door switch.

see if it goes out when you shut the doors and turn on the alarm, i think it stays on until you start the car

Aye it remains on regardless of whether the doors are locked or not, and is also on when the car is running.

When you removed the ring did you have to remove the ignition barrel ?
just that when you whip the keys to off and pull them out it triggers the light etc, so wondered if something wasnt back right.

The barrel itself is wasn't removed, but the plastic ring around it (which lights up) was unclipped and pulled away.

Still a possibility I've disturbed something though. I hate troubleshooting electronic issues

I found the below near by the steering rack and when googling the number it comes up as "Central Locking Relay Module".

When I unplug this unit (both grey plug and blue plug) the dome light remains on when set to "on", but in "auto" it switches off (whether a door is open or not).

Could this unit be my problem? If so can they be swapped between cars without reprogramming etc?

Unfortunately mate I can't help you. But was wondering if you could help me...

Do you have a pic of the hvac lights installed? Thinking about doing this to mine.

Cheers

In fact it's the
Double lock unit, 88251SA000

Unplugging this would have that effect.

Downloading these three wiring diagram sections may help....

http://ken-gilbert.com/wrx/04impreza/imp04_wir_1.pdf
http://ken-gilbert.com/wrx/04impreza/imp04_wir_2.pdf
http://ken-gilbert.com/wrx/04impreza/imp04_wir_3.pdf

FYI your link refers to BIU's in 2008 later cars

Thanks Don, I was looking at those diagrams earlier.

From what I can gather, the ring light has two wires - Blue/Red which goes straight to the fusebox and Yellow/Red which goes to the double lock unit via the "keyless entry control module".

I'm not really sure where else to take this. I can replace the white box pictured above for about £35 judging by eBay at the moment, but I'm not sure whether this will work on my car (is there any alarm/immobiliser programming involved in this unit?) or even if it'll fix my issue - so could be a waste of £35.

If the double lock unit is not the issue, I must have forced a ground somewhere on the circuit, but on visual inspection non of the wires have been stripped/broken so how I would begin to hunt that down god only knows!

From what you say in your first post for the ign ring light and dome light to be on continuously, you have introduced an earth on the negative side of the ign ring light on the YR wire linking ign switch, domelight and contol modules.

Should have said any earth is likely on the bulb side of connector B224, as that is the only part of the wiring you have disturbed.

It is possible that the double lock module has been damaged but very unlikely.

AFAIK, one of it's functions is, when the doors are unlocked, to illuminate the ign ring light and dome light whilst you enter the car independently of the door switch and then fade out via a set timer circuit.

Thanks again Don.

I've taken the steering column shroud off again today for another visual inspection.

The wires from the bulb are only visible for about three inches then they vanish into trunking which I presume takes them to a loom connector. The loom connector doesn't seem particularly accessible though which is a shame.

The 3 inches I can see of the wire looks absolutely fine, no scuffs in the coating and the connection to the bulb holder looks to be solid.

When I've got more time, I'm going to take my dial cluster out and the steering shroud so I can hopefully disconnect the loom connection and have it all out for a proper inspection, but going on holiday tomorrow and trying to sell the house - so it's all rush rush rush at the moment

ok i need the same biu module i think but;
When You look on that metal box on the left, there is a black wire(two wires inside) which is going inside-that wire is a keyring bulb wire and a question is what is inside that metal box?
or maybe that wire is going from keyring to immobiliser dont remember now?

Sure will!

Still stumped as to what can break in such a simple box. Obviously not a total failure, as central locking all worked fine...

Inside the "metal box" is the OEM immobiliser ECU to which the ign key transponder aerial is attached.
