Question Spec D R. DIFF TEMP

... light keeps coming on from cold then flickering then going out when hot.

1. Is this a common issue as the switch was replaced at 30000 miles under warranty and has failed again at 60000?

2. Is there another underlying cause?

3. Is there a cheaper fix like with the Neutral Position Switch?

4. Is the light only for indicating overheat? or does it do low oil level as well? Just asking because when I replaced the tail lights with LEDs the ABS light came on! Not too worried if it is heat only as in that case it is obviously a faulty sender.

5. Presumably under the new MOT rules, if the light is on, then it is an MOT fail? therefore have to get it sorted.

Anyone had similar experience?

look on the rear diff casing, the temp sensor is located on the filler bung, what happens is the single wire breaks on the sensor so just needs soldered back on and insulated

I have already ordered a new one. If the wire broke, would the light stay on permanently? I will retain and try to repair the old one. Thanks for tip.

**** me, £240 for a nut with a wire in it

Are STi's known for seizing up the rear diff due to elevated oil temperature? I had one sensor replaced at 30,000 miles under warranty. This one at 60,000.

I had to get it replaced because a dash light showing would mean an MOT failure. But if you're not going on track it seems an unnecessary luxury. If Subaru hadn't fitted it, it wouldn't be part of the MOT check, or any other check.

And finally, if there wasn't a sensor and the diff had to be rebuilt I can't see it costing more than the £600 that has effectively already been spent on 2 sensors.
