cleaning rear lights?
Hi,
Brought some sti rear lights for my my00, but they are a bit green inside the lenses where waters got in, anyone know how to open these rear lights up?
there seems to be clips all the way around, but i think theres glue or sealant. ive seen something about sticking lights in the oven to loosen the sealant.. is this right?
any help would be appreciated

Never seen anyone open any, nor heard of it either, sorry.
But ARE you sure the green is INSIDE, not under the outside? Mine went a bit like that, I cleaned them with spray bleach, a toothbrush, and lots of patience.
They also had lots of water INSIDE them, which I "mopped" out with paper towels held on a twist of twin and earth wiring, single core.
Then left them upright in the sunshine, but an airing cupboard would do.

yeah in and behind the edges, gave up in the end trying to open them fearing id break them, instead took them to the bath (just the cases, no bulbs etc) and cleaned them out with hot water and bleach, found shaking them vigorously half filled of water, and a slight brush with a brush on a wire worked well, then used some thin bits of cardboard and cloth to clean the other parts, almost dry now on the window sill above a radiator, look almost brand new!
cheers for the help

I think I read somewhere on how to open them and subsequent later models. You have to put them in the oven on a low heat for 10 minutes and then the glue should be really soft so you can seperate the lights. Then put them back in the oven to harden the sealent.
Nearly right, LOL.
I've not heard of anyone doing it to rear lights, I used to have a spare so could have given it a try.
I HAVE heard that trick with headlights, both glass and plastic lenses, and have done it myself with classic crystal lights to put HID projectors into them.
The only bit you got wrong is that you put them into the oven again to re-soften the glue to stick them back together, then take them out, press together and leave to harden.
