Lightbulb

Saw a link this morning claiming that you can install aftermarket bulbs in pre MY00 cars without problem. I seem to recall seeing something on SIDC FAQ to the effect that this might melt the wiring if you were using halogen or xenon bulbs.

Has anyone used after market bulbs to improve the night tim vision? If so what did you need to do? Have a MY00 which is shortly to come out of warranty and thinking about some changes.

Cheers

You won't have a problem with things like the Philips Vision Plus as they are rated the same as a normal H4 bulb fitted to the car as standard. There is a definite improvement in light output and quality though when fitting the Philips bulbs. Problems have occured in certain cases where higher output bulbs have been fitted (ie 90/100W) - technically these are also illegal for road use in the UK, as they exceed the 55/65W maximum (often these bulbs aren't 'E' marked either).

I have vision plus's on my MY01, big improvement. I wouldn't have thought you have to worry about your warrenty when changing. they are the same wattage as standard just lots brighter.

Get them from www.powerbulbs.com

I got these bulbs from powerbulbs also.
Highly impressive company, but the bulbs seem worse than the standard ones?.
Cheers.

About 18 months ago there was a trend for people to fit PIAA H4s. These were very expensive and gave very good outputs but they didn't last very long at all.

All other standard fit bulbs (Philips inc) are a little better than std IMHO but not a great deal.

I upgraded with bulbs manufactured by Ring PLC and have found that the difference is nothing to write home about (MY97). Just glad that I didn't pay Halfords' prices for them.

After a mate of mine complained about his headlights on his citroen I told him to buy PVP from powerbulbs he did and now raves about them. He reckons its the best 20 quid he has spent on his car.

Best 27 quid i ever spent, big difference at night, i went from unhappy driving at night to confident due to the much better side lobes and longer beam. Top bulbs.

I got my Philips Vision Plus bulbs (and sidelights) from Powerbulbs - impressive turn-around and good value for money at £20 inclusive.

All I will say is - I can now see again!!

Powerbulbs for me too. Excellent costomer service. Something a lot of companies who deal with us should follow.

Is there an accepted opinion about which are the best?

Presumably theseare easy to fit? (Observing the usual don't touch the bulb rule of course).

What do people think?

Cheers

Hi mate

I fitted some Halfords 90/130W and melted the connectors on both sides. Must admit though, I seem to be the only person who's had problems.

Cheers

I fitted Phillips Vision Plus to my 01 WRX, it is better but there isn't a huge difference.

Anyone got the Morettes - are they much brighter than the standard bug eyes? Or do they just look better?

Nigel S,
I've just fitted UK300 headlamps to my MY01 and gonna order the Vision plus on monday from http://www.powerbulbs.com I had the H4's from Powerbulbs.com in my bugeyes and they were much better than standard. The UK300 lamps take H7's though and personally,I don't think the standard bulbs are as 'white' as the Vision plus.If you're after the sidelights too (Which I am!) then have a look at http://www.powerbulbs.com/bvsidelight.htm
I think it's the T4W's that fit in that particular lamp? (You don't get these free like you would with the W5W's )
Perhaps someone can clarify?
Hope this helps?

Cheers,

Nick..

Cool

Mrng folks

I fitted Philips VisionPlus to my MY99. Previous to that I had 80/100W bulbs in and got a little twitchy about the legal implications. Philips are a lot better than std bulbs and probably not as bright as 80/100W but you can see as far with them. I was still not happy with the distance of my illumination though and invested in Cibie Oscar Plus'. (night vision now sorted)

BTW lads I got my Philips bulbs for £10.58 from my local parts shop what's with the £20

I paid about £12 for the osram ones. Same bulbs but a little bit cheaper. I echo the confidence increase above. Easy to fit as well, remebering not to touch the glass. It took me a couple of minutes for the 1st one and about 30 secs for the 2nd once I knew what I was doing. Massive increase in brightness. Only prblem is they make your sidelights look sh*tty if you don't change them too. Bulbs are in the mail to change them.

I use Halfords Blue bulbs. Althought they claim they give a blue tint, they actually don't. The bulbs are fantastic. They really light up a hell of alot better than the standard bulbs.

See my post(Powerbulbs tip), if you need bulbs for Prodrive lights as fitted to the UK300.

The Osram Silver Star won the best buy recently, in Autoexpress magazine. Same price as the Philips, both available from Powerbulbs.
