Question

Hi,

I want to fit 80/100W bulbs to my UK spec. MY00 Impreza. Is the wiring, switch (or is a relay fitted?) etc. up to the extra current? Has anyone done this and had problems, as I don't want to melt my switch?

Thanks in advance,

Jon Hill

Jon,
plenty have done it, a few have had probs, but not with the switch, it's the plug onto the bulbs that melt if anything.
I've got them on my my00, with no probs.

100W equates to 8.33Amps

Most wires on cars these days should handle that - what is the fuse rating, anyone know offhand? As the cable will be capable of handling the fuse rating.

The lights on these cars really are cr4p - everytime I turn them on at night I swear that I will do something about them ..... and then NEVER do!!

Post up if its improved matters wont you??

Lightbulb

I have heard stories of problems with 100w bulbs melting and blowing + plus there are illegal (I think ). Safer to put in Philips Vision Plus which suppose to give 50% mor elight 20 quid for two from www.powerbulbs.com and I think you get the blue side ones for free. Only heard good stuff about PVP I run philips vision blues but if one goes I may swap over.

A mate of mine with a citroen has tried them and he reckons its the best 20 quid he has spent on the car and goes out in it at night now

Cheers

chris

Urban myth # 954

It isn't the plug that melts on to the bulb, but the fact that the plug has two safety tags inside the rubber cover that have to be squeezed in or the plug won't come off.......

Told you I had heard stories

Still doesnt make them any less illegal or the fact they blow due to extra heat.

Pays ya money etc etc etc

Get yourself some PIAA bulbs from somewhere like Demon Tweeks.
You can get some Super White bulbs that only draw standard wattage but produce greater light eg H4 bulb that draws 65/55W but produces 110/100W hence no strain on standard wiring. Unfortunately they are not cheap

Hope this helps

Question

Draws 55W but is actually 100W????

Now I like science and I would love to know how they re-write Ohms Law!!

A 100W bulb will draw 8.33Amps and a 55W will draw 4.58Amps - theres NO escaping it!!

Its like saying, 'make your petrol tank half the size but get the same mileage out of the tank as you did before!! I happen to have one, would you like to buy it????

Pete

I think you will find that the light intensity is increased to the equivalent of a 100W bulb by use of Xenon gas in bulb so actual current draw can be low, its just that bulb is more efficient.

I use them anyway and they are excellent

I completely agree with my honrable friend above. When I had my MY98STI I put PIAA PLasma bulbs which draw much less current than an equivalent normal bulb. EG draws 80 watts but produces 110 watts and they are as close to HID as pos.

Cool

Morning all,
I also recently changed to the Philips Vision Plus bulbs and noticed an improvement - certainly not 50% better though !

Then on closer inspection of my used bulbs - they were
100 watts !!
(only had the car since November)

Still could be better though.

Very happy with my Phillips Vision PLus, great side lobes and main beam is definitely longer.

Like them so much my driver's lamps are going away, too many chips appearing on the surrounds of them, sooner or later one gonna break!

80/100 bulbs are worth the few pounds to upgrade to, I have had them in every car I have owned in the last 6 years and had no problems (inc 2 scoobs), just make sure you check the alignment as the bulb lenses are slightly different and you dont want to dazzle oncoming drivers.....I have tried various "legal" Xenon 50% brighter ones and personally I think theyre ****.

A bulb is a resistor, nothing else.

There is only one reason why "brighter" bulbs are so - they have a thinner filament which causes more resistance, and thus runs hotter, and therefore brighter.

Xenon gas allows the filament to run hotter without vapourising itself.

A bulb lives in an unhappy medium where its very existence is to run on the edge of self destructing and the filament is permanently trying to vapourise itself, with only the gas that surrounds it preventing it.

You could have a 500w equivalent bulb but it would only last seconds or minutes before it self destructed - there is always a trade off between ultimate lumens output and bulb life.

Common bulb killers are:

Bad connections.
Voltage spikes.
Too high voltage.
Vibration.
Thermal shock.
Excess bulb temperature.
