Default Morette Bulbs?

Just trying to work out what bulbs are needed as i want to replace them.

I see that the main driving lights are H1,
Not entirly sure what the small bulb under them is for?

And i cant for the life of me find anything that looks like the full beam bulb

Any ideas?

Also is it possiable to get a replacement for the silver reflector part as its rather pitted and corroded

Tim

What model year Morettes, and ARE they genuine Morettes, or a copy?

Yes, mate, that's an H2. They ARE available in higher wattage, (offroad only), but I've not seen any of the uprated bulbs, (Philips Vision Plus, Osram Nightbreakers, etc), available in that fitting.

The problem of fitting higher wattage bulbs in that fitting is that the lighting connector is also the clip holding the bulb in place. Higher temperatures generated by the higher wattage cause the clip to lose it's springiness, causing poor connection, arcing and premature bulb failure.

Yes, mate. Have a look here: CIBIE LIGHTING

Depending on the model year, and IF they are genuine Morettes, whichy use Cibie lamps, yours will be there.

If you get stuck, post again, or a pic of the reflector that's gone, etc

Cool

They look like the real thing. On a 98 car, there should be 4 discrete light units:
1. the outer pair, which are 5 3/4" Cibie units, having an H4 bulb, (NOT an H1 as you said), and doing dip, and main beam.

IF there is a small bulb included at the bottom of the unit, it's an auxilliary sidelight..........I say auxilliary, since 98 cars had the sidelights in large units to the outer edge of the headlights.
My Morettes have a place to PUT another sidelight, but I can't be ars*d to do it

2. The inner pair of lights are about 5" diameter, and are sort of like driving lights. They are main beam units, coming on WITH the main beam in the outer pair, to give more power to the main beam, and are controlled by a relay, triggered off the main beam circuit. They use an H2 bulb, the one you pictured.

Look here: Cibie Classic Headlamps

The outer pair SHOULD be the 7th one down on that page, labelled H130 RHD, main and dip with sidelight. Note that a light does exist using H1, but is for main beam only, and has NO sidelight, (5th one down).

The inners are 15th down, labelled TSM.

All the above assumes that YOUR lights ARE using Cibie units. You can see the brand name on the light's glass Check, because I've seen Morettes with Hella units too, but not recently, and not in the UK.

just checked mine and its definalty got H1s in it and has a small bulb in the same unit too.

Unless at some stange someone has put a H1 in and H4 socket but surely the H1 would be to small for the H4 socket and not fit corectly. The H1 seems to fit it just right

But did you check if it's a Cibie unit? AFAIK, the only unit made by Cibie of the size needed to fit the outers on Morettes, is the H130, and they only come in main beam with an H1 bulb. My website also said that those fitted with an H1 bulb did NOT have a sidelight fitting.

Can you post a pic of the light unit you have? The outer, not the inner? Or alternatively, search the glass lens for a makers' mark.

Mine are BOTH clearly branded "Cibie".

TBH, I've never heard of classic shape Morettes with single filament bulbs in both lights

I checked the glassware and they are indeed Cibie.

I took a few photos too if that helps.

The back of the unit in question

The bulbs that are currently in the above unit

The backs

The corroded inner unit

Hope this helps explain a bit more.

Question

Well, I'll be, that IS an HI fitting, and it IS a Cibie unit

OK, what I'd do is upgrade the H1 to something like an Osram Nightbreaker 90% uprated, or one of BOB5's HID kits, which are xcellent in H1, so long as you know that they are for "offroad use only", like 100W bulbs

The inners, I'd replace the lens/reflector units and stick with standard H2 bulbs, or, if you are feeling lucky, go for the 100W versions of those, available on t'internet, but again, "for offroad use only"

Sorry, I can't see a third connection, unless you mean the earth wire?

Oh, and ditch those silly blue headlight bulbs, they just cut down on the available light

The third wire in the picture is the live for the main beam of the original lights
so you could ditch both the outers with the H1 fitting and fit the H4 light fittings
For even better night light , then you would not have to upgrade the bulbs in the inner main beam units

Just another quick question for you.

Side light bulbs, i know this is me being picky but they seem to be a yellowy light coming from them. Is there any bulb that gives off a while light in side light fitment?

Hope that makes sence.

If you mean the sidelight bulbs in the actual sidelights, NOT in the headlight, then yes.

They are W5W bulbs, and various places do blue tint bulbs, LED conversions etc.

If you buy bulbs on the internet, some places offer free sidelight upgrades.
