wipers got too much play in them

wipers got too much play in them
when the wipers are stopped i can move them a few inchin each direction.its not a prob until you are using them when the right one touches the top of the the right window pillar.bizaarly when going around a right hand corner the wiper stops where it should do,about 2 inch from the pillar.
ive had a look under the bonnet but it involves removing a plastic trim i think.
any ideas what i should be looking for.its a 98 uk turbo btw

wear in a linkage joint maybe?
