Quick hid fitting question
Brought some hids from one of the group buys and i'm planning on fitting this weekend.
My question (which may be daft) is do i remove the metal part around the bulb? Few people i've spoke to say yes, others no.

The cars a my99 if that makes a difference.
cheers

You need to keep the metal part on as its for the H4 fitting u take that off and you cant fit to your headlight just remove the old bulb and place new hid in headlight then fasten the clip then remove the bulb by twisting to the left fit the rubber cover over the holder then place the bulb back into the holder and twist to the right to lock.
Not an expert in this kind of H4 fitting HID blub but I'll jump in with some thoughts.
When you say remove the metal bit I assume you're talking about the big half round shroud around the front of the blub? The conventional H4 bulb doesn't have this half round metal shroud fitted. But instead some headlights come fitted with a shroud within the lens assembly.
If you try and fit your shrouded HID to a car with the shroud built into the lens then they'll clash and it won't go in so you'll need to remove the shroud from the HID first. If you try and fit the HID to a car with an empty lens unit then it'll fit fine and no need to remove the shroud from the HID. Take the H4 bulb out and you'll be able to see through the lens if theres a shroud built into the lens or if there's a big empty space in there.
Similarly some headlights use a projector type lens, the big bullseye shaped glass lens. If you try and HID convert one of these the metal shroud on the HID may hit the back of the projector lens before the HID is fully in place. So again with this type you'll need to remove the metal shroud first.

i've fitted a H4 HID kit to my96 uk classic. and i've left the metal shroud on. i'm wondering if i've done the right thing. As the bulbs i took out didn't have a shroud on them so there might be one in the lens already
Chelspeed thats the part i mean. The original bulb doesn't have a metal surround which is what got me thinking.
Like you say the crystal headlights have there own cover for the bulbs, so it might not even fit with the metal cover on.
I'll mess around with them tommorrow and see if it makes any difference. To wet today.
