Question heater control illumination

the vent direction control **** has lost it light source! how do I get to it to replace the duff lamp and what sort of lamp is it?
I have got the section of dash out that cosists of the heater controls and center vents but cant get to see the back of the unit fully as the bowden cables wont let it come out far enough! do I have to undo the bowden cables fom the heater box end first?

96/7 sports hatch pre and post face lift model from what I can gather?

If you feel around the back, there are three small plugs towards the top that lock into the back of the heater controls. Twist and remove them to get to the bulb. You don't have to completely remove the controls to change the bulbs.

Yeah, wait until you have to change bulbs in the gauge cluster.
